Introduction

The School is looking to appoint an experienced Assistant Musical Director to be responsible for the vocal coaching of pupils and to assist the Musical Director in the delivery of the musical theatre repertoire provision in the school across all vocational courses and age ranges.


Main duties

To devise schemes of work and assessment for the delivery of vocal technique, musicianship and performance throughout the school in conjunction with the Musical Director and Head of Music Department


To teach class singing lessons as per the timetable, focusing on vocal technique, musicianship and performance for pupils, aged 8 to 18 on all of the school’s vocational courses, as dictated by the timetable

To teach and coach classical, musical theatre and pop vocal repertoire confidently and to be an excellent pianist for accompanying students in lessons and playing in rehearsals as required


To advise pupils on the appropriate repertoire for their age and development and to assist pupils in the preparation for assessments, auditions and performances including auditions for performance opportunities and higher education auditions when appropriate.


To assist the Musical Director in the preparation for performance including coaching repertoire, securing band members and be available as an accompanist for pupils as required during classes and rehearsals. To musically direct, play and/or conduct performances as required.

To work with the Directors of Courses and Musical Director to choose appropriate material/shows for performance for year groups/courses as dictated by the school calendar.


Be responsible for the preparation and development of teaching materials and teaching programmes as appropriate.

Along with the Course Directors, to seek appropriate external performance opportunities which are of benefit to the pupils and the school. 


Be accountable for the attainment, progress and outcomes of pupils you teach.


Be aware of pupils’ capabilities, their prior knowledge and plan teaching and differentiate appropriately to build on these, demonstrating knowledge and understanding of how pupils learn.

Maintain standards of discipline according to the school’s codes of conduct and in line with the school’s rewards and sanctions programmes.


To prepare reports of pupils’ progress


To maintain an up-to-date register of pupils’ attendance in lessons

To meet with parents as required to discuss a pupil’s progress.


To attend staff meetings, in-service training and conferences regularly to keep up-to-date with current training methods.

To liaise with administrative, academic and pastoral staff as necessary.

To undertake any reasonable duties at the request of the Principal, Deputy Principal or Director of Studies.


Person Specification

Essential:

Educated to degree level or equivalent qualification and/or significant experience as a Vocal Coach and Assistant Musical Director.

Experience of teaching in a performing arts setting, with a passion for ensuring excellence in teaching, learning and training.

Be familiar with and have experience using the following software Sibelius, Main Stage, LogicPro and QLab.

Sound knowledge and understanding of vocal pedagogy 

Experience of providing artistic guidance to young people in an educational setting.

Excellent communication/interpersonal skills and ability to work as part of a team/across departments/with external contractors.

Experience of managing budgets/resourcing.

Strong administration skills with the ability to juggle multiple tasks and work under pressure to meet deadlines.
