About Thomas Deacon Education Trust (TDET)

TDET is a charitable organisation dedicated to raising educational outcomes across a range of primary and secondary phase schools and academies in the East Midlands.  As a multi-academy trust we strive to provide outstanding teaching and learning for all and an ethos and culture that encourages everyone to be the very best that they can be.

We put learners, and their learning, at the heart of everything we do.

Thomas Deacon Academy

Trust: we are honest

Discipline: we never give up

Aspiration: we want the very best

Thomas Deacon Academy was one of the first Academies to be created and continues to thrive through our core values of Trust, Discipline and Aspiration. As we enter the exciting new phase of our future we continue to offer an aspirational learning environment for students from the ages of 7 to 18 years old. Our modern facilities, TDA Junior, Sixth Form Study Centre and 43 acre campus allow us to provide the ultimate in educational choice.

The Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen to appoint a well-qualified, inspirational and ambitious Assistant Subject Leader of English to join Thomas Deacon Academy.

Our English department nurtures a passion and love of literature from across the world, with the ambition to equip all students with the ability to speak, read and write fluently and with confidence. Our students embrace exposure to cultural capital through a range of well-considered texts across the literary canon, but also reaching beyond traditionally studied authors to include a diverse range of voices and perspectives. Our curriculum teaches students critical reading skills, enabling them to read a range of texts intelligently, analytically and perceptively. Students at TDA are given a wealth of opportunities to write creatively using foundational knowledge and understanding of grammar, and the principles of rhetoric. Our curriculum is built on a foundation of core knowledge in the areas of grammar, linguistics, academic literary concepts, vocabulary, context and form. Knowledge is mapped in a spiral curriculum, building from KS2 foundations, and is regularly deepened and refined through retrieval. Sitting alongside our substantive curriculum is a bespoke 50K reading program where students are exposed bi-weekly to an even greater range of forms, genres, topics and viewpoints.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a school within one of the well-regarded Trusts in the eastern region. The school has a great history of success and a bright and exciting future and we are looking for an ambitious and dynamic leader to steer it through the next stage of its development.

Collaboration, educational research and professional development are at the core of how the schools within TDET work together. With a clear focus on leadership at all levels, the Trust is well placed to provide great opportunities to promote Thomas Deacon Academy as a leading school and you will be given effective support to develop you personally as an outstanding teacher. In addition, being part of TDET there will be a wide range of opportunities to grow and develop within the Academy and Trust wide.

Thomas Deacon Academy

The Thomas Deacon Academy that we know today opened in 2007 as one of the UK’s first and largest academies. Whilst a building does not make a school, it is worth noting that Thomas Deacon Academy was designed by Norman Foster and Partners and in addition to our impressive main academy our beautiful 43-acre campus includes TDA Juniors - a modern, light and purpose-built Key Stage 2 facility - and expansive playing fields and sporting facilities.

Moving forward, our vision for the academy is a simple one: we want every member of our learning community to be the very best that they can be and achieve their full potential.

The academy’s core values of Trust, Discipline and Aspiration define who we are as a community and how we learn together. We believe that every member of our learning community should have the highest expectations and standards, showing trust and discipline in all that we do.

In September 2018, a new extension to the existing main building led to new accommodation being created for a sixth form study centre, refectory expansion and staff professional learning centre.

In September 2019, TDA received a very positive Ofsted report, judging the academy to be Good overall. Ofsted commented favourably, amongst other things, on the overall leadership of the academy, good teaching, positive relationships between staff and students and students’ behaviour. These aspects of the academy have been maintained alongside the identified areas for development being addressed.

The existing leadership structure sees a Principal supported by a Deputy Head and  a team of 2 Vice Principals and 5 Assistant Principals, plus the lead of the Head of TDAJ, all supported by the Trust’s Director of Education.

TDET

The Thomas Deacon Education Trust (TDET) is a multi-academy Trust that unites and empowers like-minded schools to achieve the very best for their students and communities.

We are unashamedly proud of our links to the city of Peterborough and its surrounding areas.

We share the city’s ambitious vision for growth and believe that our schools and the education of young people need to be at the heart of these plans.

As a Trust, we work across all key phases of education to provide every child in our community with the best life chances and high aspirations.

Our academies work closely together, taking part in real and meaningful collaborations between teachers, students and local business leaders. We value our local communities and actively encourage our schools and staff to share best practice to benefit all children within each local area.

All members of our Trust – our academies, members of staff, students and communities - are united in purpose through a common set of values and expectations:

· Trust – we are honest and supportive

· Diversity – we embrace individual differences

· Excellence – we want the very best and never give up on doing what is right

· Transformation – we work together to make a positive impact

Through experience, we know that there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all approach to education. Our academies are individual members of the Trust community and are connected by a common set of values but are free to innovate and adapt to the needs of its pupils and the local community.

We firmly believe that the Trust as a whole is more than the sum of its parts. Therefore, all of our academies are equally valued and contribute to the development and direction of the Trust as we grow together.
