Job overview

The Vacancy

The successful candidate will work as a laboratory Assistant Team Leader Science Technician in a large and successful Science Faculty.

The teaching team comprises 17 science teachers.  In Years 7 and 8 Science is taught in tutor groups (max. 31).  In Year 9 science classes are currently reduced by splitting the six tutor groups into eight science groups.  In Years 10 and 11 we aim to keep teaching groups size down to a maximum of 25.  The sciences are a popular choice at A Level and there are thriving groups in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.  Practical assessments are currently undertaken at AS and A2 level in all three sciences, preparation for which requires complete integrity on the part of the technicians.

Where possible, science in the school is mainly taught in specialist biology, chemistry and physics laboratories. There are twelve laboratories in total which are located in three main areas within the school.  The laboratories are served by four preparation rooms.

This vacancy is for a full-time Assistant Team Leader Technician to join a team consisting of a Team Leader Technician, one Technician and two Assistant Technicians. Reporting to the Team Leader Technician, duties will be mainly focused on the support of Chemistry lessons within the school, but the applicant should be willing to assist in any of the science areas as determined by the Head of Science.  Experience of advanced level Chemistry preparation would be a distinct advantage.  The applicant will be energetic, willing to learn and keen to take advantage of the training opportunities available which may be in, or out of, school.  Above all the applicant will be friendly, flexible, good humoured and able to work effectively as part of a team.

You will be required to work 37 hours per week, 41 weeks per year.

First established in 1589, Queen Elizabeth’s High School is a grammar school located in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire. The school has existed in its current guise as a co-educational grammar school since 1983, when the two single-sex schools merged into a single institution. A state grammar school, Queen Elizabeth’s is academically selective in its admissions but charges no fees for tuition. With around 1200 pupils on roll in a co-educational setting aged 11-18, the school is noticeably larger than most secondary schools, around 150 of these residing in the school sixth form. Queen Elizabeth’s has seen extensive modernisation and development over the years.
