Job overview

The Royal Ballet School is one of the world’s greatest centres of classical ballet training. Our mission is to nurture, train and educate exceptional young dancers for the Royal Ballet companies and other leading UK and international companies, and to inspire the future of classical ballet training. Our vision is to be the best classical ballet school in the world.

Our core academic offer at the Upper School in Covent Garden is the BA(Hons) Degree in Classical Ballet and Dance Performance. In addition, from September 2021, we are embarking on an exciting new project in which we will offer a non-degree programme with a variety of online learning and on-site student supported study pathways.

We are seeking a Learning Manager and an Assistant Learning Manager to launch, develop and manage this strand of our broader academic offer. Both will be an integral part of the wider academic team at the Upper School and will work with, and support, some of the most talented young dancers in the world.

The non-degree team will work closely together, and manage all aspects of the non-degree programme. They are expected to collaborate with those teaching on the degree programme, EAL and SEND specialists where appropriate, and pastoral staff, in order to provide a complete academic support network for each student in their care.

The post holder will play a full and active role in the broader life of the School, pastorally and artistically.

Hours: 0.5 FTE . Working hours are defined as 8.15am to 12.15pm Monday to Friday during term time.

Location: Covent Garden, London.  Please consider the travel requirements and lack of parking for workers in this area of London.

Please note that you must complete an application form, which you can download from our website. CV’s are not accepted.

Interviews: Week beginning 8th February 2021 (all candidates should be prepared for interviews to be conducted remotely)

Candidates should make it clear if they would also like to be considered for the Learning Manager role.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff to share this commitment. The successful candidates will be required to undertake an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring check and further pre-employment checks to comply with boarding school recruitment regulations.

We’re passionate about creating an inclusive workplace that promotes and values diversity.  At The Royal Ballet School we are committed to creating an environment where every one of our employees feels part of our team and can flourish, regardless of their background.

The Royal Ballet School is made up of the Lower and Upper Schools. The Upper School has 83 students aged 16-19 and is situated in new buildings in Covent Garden. Almost all of the graduating students go on to gain dance contracts with classical dance companies within the UK and around the world. The Lower School, situated at White Lodge in Richmond Park has 124 pupils of which 121 are full or weekly boarders.

The Royal Ballet School is a unique place, our mission statement ‘To celebrate the past, herald the future but concentrate on the present’ sums up the atmosphere completely.

Whilst we are proud of our place in the birth and development of classical ballet in the UK we are mindful of the need to move forward. To this end a major redevelopment of facilities at both the Upper and Lower Schools has recently been completed as have improvements to the first and second year boarding facilities in Barons Court and Covent Garden. The School is a member of SHMIS and of the National Association of Music and Dance Schools (NAMDS), a large number of our students (UK and EU) receive support from the DfES under the Gifted and Talented Scheme. Many non EU students are supported by generous scholarships and bursaries which are funded by the School endowment fund or by individual sponsors.

The Upper School is truly international with over 30% of the students coming from overeas and of these approximately half will not have English as their first language.
