Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced primary leader to have impact on a school at a key point on its improvement trajectory.

Sandy Lane Primary School is a larger than average primary school, with 655 children on roll. We are a well-resourced school, situated in extensive grounds near the centre of Bracknell Town Centre, a stone’s throw away from the exciting new town centre development, the ‘Lexicon’. We were judged Requires Improvement in May 2015 and are moving forward on our journey to Good and beyond. We have wonderful children, a hardworking and caring teaching and support team, good Local Authority support and challenge, a new passionate, dedicated and professional governing body and a highly pro-active parent fundraising group.

The new Headteacher and new Governing Body of Sandy Lane Primary (September 2015) are looking for a motivated, passionate and hardworking Associate Head to work closely with the Headteacher to drive forward further school improvement on the school’s fast paced journey to good and beyond. We need to embed and sustain further development to meet our aim for Sandy Lane to be judged a good plus school in our next Section 5 inspection (due from Spring 2017).

You will need to be an experienced Deputy Head of a primary school who is looking for that interim step between Deputy Headship and Headship and who wants to work with a Headteacher who develops leaders and distributes to enable your professional development needs to be met. The Associate Head role in our revised leadership structure sits between the role of Head Teacher and Deputy Head and is viewed as one to ensure a sustainable future for the leadership of Sandy Lane. Your experience will need to be that which has had demonstrable impact at whole school level and references will need to be able to indicate your credibility as a leader, leading school development impact and outcomes as the main leader.

This is a role where you will hold responsibility for key areas of school development, yet still work alongside an experienced Headteacher who holds the main accountability. The key foci of the role are to ensure high standards of learning and teaching, which impacts on achievement and to evolve our Enquiry Curriculum to one that meets the needs of Sandy Lane children and develops and showcases the uniqueness of Sandy Lane. You will line manage the Deputy Head and Assistant Head, holding them to account for measurable impact in their roles.

If you are genuinely keen to make a difference and determined to work together as a team to make Sandy Lane reach its potential of being an outstanding school, then this could be the ideal role for you.

The Headteacher is looking for a values driven leader, who is courageous when it comes to decision making and actions for the good of the children- being children first will be the marker of all of your decision making and actions. You will need to demonstrate that you are a reflective leader, with aspiration towards headship and continuing professional development. Trust, loyalty and the ability to hold strong boundaries with a staff team are key interpersonal skills to be able to demonstrate as being a strategic ally for sustained school improvement is key to this role.

If you would like an informal chat with the Headteacher, Gemma Jackson, please contact her via Mrs Louise Fallows, Secretary/Head’s PA on 01344 423896 or via secretary@sandylanebracknell.com

Visits to see the school in action are also welcome, via appointment.

Please detail in your application form clearly, with reference to the person specification and job description, your responses to the following two questions:

  • Why is Sandy Lane the school for your next leadership challenge?
  • What can you offer Sandy Lane?
