Job overview

We are looking for an Attendance Officer with the responsibility for the improvement and monitoring of attendance and punctuality of all students across Walsall Studio School. Ensuring that attendance rises above national expectation.

In summary:  Work alongside school leaders and the wider pastoral team to fulfil the following aspects of the role:

Monitor Attendance 

Utilise Studio School’s Management Information System to:


  • Ensure all registers are completed timely and accurately;  
  • Monitor the input of lates and absences; 
  • Complete ‘first day absence calls’ for all students;
  • Maintain and update attendance records to ensure accuracy in accordance with information received from parents, pastoral leaders and tutor teams;
  • Identify poor attenders in liaison with pastoral leaders and tutors and monitor their attendance;
  • Generate weekly attendance reports for tutors and pastoral leaders.

Attendance Analysis  

Support pastoral team functions across Studio School by:


  • Collating previous school attendance data for all students on entry into Y10 and Y12 and use of previous school data to analyses term by term progress;
  • Producing reports showing percentage attendance/ lates for a range of subgroups e.g. house, year, gender, ethnicity, EAL, SEND and Pupil Premium; 
  • Provide analysis of attendance trends and patterns to support effective intervention and support strategies;
  • Benchmark – keep abreast of the latest national statistics and strategies to improve/ maintain attendance at Walsall Studio School and utilise this data to set ambitious attendance targets for the school.

Attendance Intervention  


  • Work alongside pastoral leaders to promote the importance of good attendance across Walsall Studio School, utilising a range of strategies e.g. assemblies, rewards, letters home;
  • Conduct home visits as and when necessary, working alongside the Studio’s coaching team to fully understand and develop strategies to tackle known barriers to attendance;
  • Work with targeted students to improve attendance; meeting students, parents and other outside agencies when necessary to implement supportive strategies; 
  • Host attendance clinics and attend parent’s evenings and key Studio events to increase opportunities for parental engagement;
  • Administer fixed term penalty notices in liaison with Education Welfare Services;
  • Liaise with the exams officer during examination seasons to ensure that students at risk of non-attendance are monitored and supported.

Other Duties

Data Management Behaviour: In addition to fulfilling the role of attendance officer, the post holder will work alongside the pastoral team and effectively utilise the school’s MIS to identify frequent behaviour events, identify students involved and spot trends and patterns in behaviour over time and across subjects. Understand behaviour data, and view it alongside attainment and assessment data, enabling you to monitor the impact of interventions and improve student outcomes.  In summary, this includes:


  • Setting up behaviour events to reflect the school’s behaviour policy 
  • Setting up actions that staff should perform in response 
  • Using the behaviour explorer to view details of events by date range, tutor group, house, year group, subject, teacher etc.  
  • View in-group and student variations in behaviour events alongside assessment and attendance data
  • Use behaviour charts to analyse patterns and monitor impact of interventions and focus groups 
  • Download detention events to support management of detentions 
  • Setup and manage behaviour notifications for teachers 
  • Communicating behaviour data to parents and students
