Inspire their remarkable with us

Aylward Academy is an oversubscribed 11-19 non-selective state school with a thriving Sixth Form. It is proud to serve its surrounding communities but is only rated as a ‘Good’ school by OfSTED and, in our mind, good is not good enough.

The Executive Director for Aylward Academy was previously responsible for the turnaround at Harris Academy Battersea, a school which rose from bottom in Wandsworth to become one of the top non-selective schools in the country. Both he and the Principal at Aylward are determined that the school becomes outstanding as soon as possible and not a middling outstanding but one of the most outstanding schools in the country. With that in mind, we are advertising for exceptional staff and do so with the obvious understanding that their remuneration should match the level of expertise that we are seeking. We want people with aspirations to lead schools of their own, people who will fight alongside their students for outcomes that will open doors otherwise closed to them and people who understand that care manifests itself in an absolute intolerance of mediocrity. We wish to build headteachers of the future whilst securing the futures of those children who have entrusted their education to us.

As an Assistant Vice Principal with responsibility for Maths, you will be pivotal in redefining what is possible for our students. You will be excellent in your classroom practice and be able to lead others in their own pursuit of excellence. You will provide clarity, structure and vision for a group of staff who are committed to driving Aylward Academy forward. At its best, the school will never be a group of individual superstars; it will be a fiercely determined collective, working together without ego for the best interests of our pupils.

In terms of the broader school, we recognise that teaching is a demanding career and it is our aim to make sure that staff who have chosen to join the profession are as well supported as they can be. We have a zero tolerance approach to anything that interrupts the learning in a classroom and our central team deals with all behaviour issues, non-completion of homework, phone-calls and detentions to make sure that teachers are as free as possible to do the three things that matter most: mark, plan and teach.

As part of a national trust, you will receive all the support you would expect but most importantly, you will be part of a dynamic, resilient and focused group of professionals whose efforts as a whole will mean better lives for every single pupil who walks through our doors.

Should you wish to find out more then we would be more than happy to speak to you. You can contact the Executive Director using dmoody@academiesenterprisetrust.org or the Principal using riafrate@aylwardacademy.org. We look forward to hearing from you.

Closing date: Friday 23 April 2021

Interviews will commence shortly after the closing date.

About Aylward Academy

**Please scroll to the bottom of this page to view our live vacancies**

Based in Edmonton, North London, Aylward Academy was established in September 2010 and is an 11-19 learning community with over 1,000 students on roll, including a thriving sixth form. The academy is currently rated as GOOD by its last Ofsted inspection in July 2021. Our unwavering standards have seen the academy become the school of choice for both the local and surrounding areas and for the fourth year in a row the academy has been oversubscribed.

At Aylward Academy we are dedicated to maximising the potential of learners; staff and students alike work hard to uphold our core values of: Respect, Professionalism, Independence, Collaboration, Resilience and Creativity.

We believe in developing the individual as a ‘whole’ and strive to ensure our vision is understood by all: ‘Working together to be the best that we can be.’  It is this vision that underpins everything we do - at Aylward Academy ‘everything matters’.

As part of our commitment to life-long learning, we place high value on CPD opportunities at all levels. Ofsted noted that teachers were complimentary about the support they receive to cultivate their skills and feel well supported. Staff are experienced, knowledgeable and innovative. As a result, we encourage a ’can do’ attitude which we instil through a culture of ‘no excuses’. Our learning journey is both rich and purposeful, one of the reasons for our rapidly expanding, highly resourced sixth form.

Curriculum

Most pupils arrive in Year 7 with attainment that is significantly below that expected for their age and with extremely low literacy levels. The extensive and effective literacy programme in Years 7 and 8 ensures that pupils are taught appropriate skills to be able to access the wider curriculum which meets the needs of the diverse pupil population. Pupils are offered different curriculum pathways to meet their individual academic needs, particularly at key stage 4. A range of BTEC national diploma, GCSE and entry-level qualifications ensures that pupils have access to appropriate courses.

At key stage 4 all students study a core curriculum of English, Maths and Science and have the opportunity to choose from a huge range of 25 GCSE and BTEC courses, including a range of Languages (French, Spanish and Arabic) and a new Computer Science qualification. In addition, the Academy offers students the opportunity to take a wide range of community languages, which reflect our diverse student population.

Sixth Form Provision

At KS5, the Academy offers two curriculum pathways, which students are allocated depending on their KS4 qualifications.  At level three, students are offered a range of 30+ A level and BTEC courses. Students are given the opportunity to study AS, A2, BTEC only or a mixture of BTEC and AS and A2 courses. This is dependent on their prior attainment and choices. Our level two hub offers students the opportunity to choose from seven level 2 BTEC courses, ranging from Catering to PE and Arts Award. Alongside this, students would continue to study English and Maths as well as being offered the opportunity for a work placement linked to their BTEC course of choice. Much emphasis is given to providing work and volunteering experiences for students. Success rates for university applications are high.

Extra-Curricular

At Aylward Academy we firmly believe that a rich provision of extra-curricular opportunity benefits our students enormously and allows every child to contribute in their own way. This is why we create opportunities outside of lesson time to allow our students to thrive in the fields of sport, music, art and drama.
