Job overview

Kent College Pembury excels in adding value to its pupils both academically and pastorally. We are seeking an enthusiastic and well-qualified teacher to cover maternity leave (0.60).  Applicants need to be confident in teaching Biology to A-level. The ability to teach a second subject, especially Chemistry, would be an advantage.

Impressive science laboratories were opened in September 2008 to provide the facilities science  needs and deserves for the 21st century.  A modern entrance foyer leads into the new Darbyshire  Wing, which comprises three new laboratories (two general purpose and one Sixth Form), upgraded  storage and preparation areas, and a new staff work room.  The existing laboratories have been  upgraded, one as a computer suite with 20 networked pcs and an interactive whiteboard.   Science is a thriving department with a good academic record with well-qualified and dedicated  staff who work closely together. Three excellent technicians ably support them.

Students are taught in purpose-built science accommodation, with specialist laboratories for physics,  chemistry and biology.  The latest apparatus is used and maintained to a high standard, and the  department has ICT facilities with internet access via the school network.  Academic standards are very high; GCSE, AS and ‘A’ level results are good and a larger percentage  of girls stay on to study Physics and Chemistry ‘A’ levels than do nationally. Normally we have one  Physics, two Biology and two Chemistry sets at both AS and A2 level.  Most years see one or two  science students being offered Oxbridge or medicine places and a number of others follow science  related courses.

In Years 7 and 8 girls follow a general science course, based on the National Curriculum.   The sciences are taught separately from Year 8.  Currently all girls follow the double or triple award Edexcel IGCSE at GCSE. At ‘A’ level students follow the OCR ‘A’ courses.

Many of our international boarders include at least one science in their ‘A’ level choices, and they  require sympathetic teaching as English can be a problem at first.  IT provision in the department is strong; in addition to the computer suite all the main labs are  equipped with a networked PC connected to a digital projector and the new labs are equipped with  interactive white boards.

About Kent College, Pembury

Background

Founded in Folkestone in 1886, Kent College was recognised at the outset for being ‘the most forward-looking school of its time’, something we still embody today. We are an independent day and boarding school from 3-18 years. Our Forest Explorers Nursery is for girls and boys from rising 3 years. Boys can currently join Reception and Year 1, and from September 2023 Year 2 and each subsequent year group as the Prep School gradually moves to a co-educational school by 2027. The Senior School is girls only from ages 11-18 years. Since 1939, Kent College has been located in 75 acres of beautiful countryside in Pembury, on the outskirts of Tunbridge Wells. The school campus enjoys excellent facilities, including two indoor sports halls, indoor swimming pool (due to be completed in 2023), floodlit Astro, state of the art 200 seat theatre, modern science block, art studios and a Sixth Form centre.

Nursery and Prep School

The Prep School is a friendly, caring and happy school with a current roll of over 130 pupils aged 3 to 11 (Nursery – Year 6). The majority are day pupils with a small number of boarders. In addition to the core subjects of English, Maths and Science, all of the pupils in Key Stage 2 study Geography, History, Art, DT and RE. ICT is taught from Year 1 upwards. There are specialist teachers in Music, French, Drama and PE, and Mandarin is taught in Year 6. Class sizes in KS1 and KS2 are normally a maximum of 21. Each year, a number of pupils apply for and are awarded scholarships to the Senior School, and around two thirds of Year 6 pupils move up to the Senior School.

Senior School and Sixth Form

The Senior School has around 400 day and boarding pupils. Boarders make up 20% of the total school and come from all over the world. Entry at 11 and 13 is by the GL CAT4 test and the school accepts pupils with a range of academic abilities, with approximately half of our KS3 intake within the top 25% of the national ability range. Kent College offers a choice of over 26 GCSE subjects, with group sizes usually between 3 and 18. Most pupils complete 10 GCSEs or IGCSEs, but there is the opportunity to take more or less depending on interest or need. Students are also accepted for entry at 16+ and there are approximately 100 pupils in the Sixth Form. We offer around 27 subjects at A Level. BTECs are on offer in PE, Drama and Computer Science. Class sizes in the Sixth Form normally range between 3 and 12.

Extra Curricular Activities (ECA)

Kent College places a strong emphasis on extra-curricular activities and has a flexible and innovative lunchtime and evening programme of prep and activity sessions. All pupils are encouraged to plan the use of their time so that they follow a balanced programme of academic work and extra-curricular activities. The pastoral care in the school is very strong and all staff are highly involved in wellbeing and general pastoral matters. All teaching staff are required to be involved in at least one ECA and most do more than this, as both subject and general ECA’s are available.

ISI

Pupils…are thoughtful and compassionate, with a well-developed understanding of right and wrong and a high degree of emotional maturity. Leadership and management, and also governance, are excellent.”
