Appleford School is a specialist day and boarding school for pupils aged 7-18 with dyslexia and associated learning difficulties, set in the beautiful Wiltshire countryside in the village of Shrewton, just off the A303.  Our ethos is to build children’s confidence through continuous support and the of their celebration of success.  Rated ‘Excellent’ by ISI in all categories, the school has been providing the highest quality teaching for pupils with dyslexia for over 30 years.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, friendly individual to join our team here at Appleford School.  You will need to have excellent interpersonal skills, a willingness listen and hear, energy to simply get on with it, able to see and overcome obstacles and ideally be computer literate (Word, Excel, Outlook). 

We are a warm and caring community here, where each boarding house is a home from home for the pupils who board with us.  

Boarding Assistants share the pastoral responsibility for the well-being of the boarding pupils in the five houses, outside of the school day.  Supporting children as young as 7 years old, through to our 6th form house where the boarders attend college.  Working under the direction of the Houseparent to ensure the House functions in accordance with the Boarding policies and procedures of Appleford School.

Duties will involve organising, risk assessing and participating in a wide-range of activities with the boarders that stimulate them physically, socially and mentally both indoors and outdoors, utilising our facilities on our 8-acre site and surrounding area. 

Your mentoring role and leadership skills will promote and help the boarders with their studies, provide pastoral routine with their bedtimes, personal hygiene and self-presentation and ensuring they are stimulated other than by their electronic devices.

You will need to attend Staff meetings where appropriate, complete National Online Safety and Safeguarding training and attend INSET training days.

The role of an Assistant House Parent is pivotal in keeping the continuity and consistency of our boarders, so the hours required mimic that of the House Parents but different evenings off.

Monday – Friday Mornings 7am to 9am

Monday – Wednesday Evenings 4:30pm – 9pm (Thursday nights off, back in House by 9pm)

Each Friday 3pm – 4.30pm and Each Sunday 5pm – 9pm


11/12 weekends a year

Friday 4.30pm – Sunday 5pm (Averaging you working 1 weekend in 3)
