Job overview

Queen Ethelburga’s is an Independent Foundation of four co-educational schools. Located in North Yorkshire between the towns of York and Harrogate, we offer outstanding facilities and motivated students who join us with a broad range of academic, social and cultural backgrounds. We pride ourselves on being a happy community where students can grow to reach their full potential, both academically and socially. To meet the needs of our students we offer a wide choice of qualifications, a supportive environment and an exciting programme of extra–curricular opportunities, which are underpinned by high quality teaching and learning. The school actively promotes the professional development of its staff through induction, CPD and career development opportunities.

We are now seeking a vibrant and forward-thinking Boarding House Tutor with a passion for the pastoral care of Boarders to join our Boarding team.   This is a demanding role, which can be emotionally draining at times with long hours, which, by the very nature of the role, must be flexible. You will need resilience, mental fortitude and a passion for pastoral care to succeed in this key role, which is both rewarding and fulfilling.

Boarding roles are all non-teaching roles. This is deliberate as the boarding team are considered professionals in their own right. Boarding at Queen Ethelburga’s is a team approach, dedicated to the pastoral care of all its students.

The successful candidate should have knowledge of the statement of national minimum standards for boarding schools (NMS) and have relevant experience of working with young people between the ages of 6 and 18.

The successful candidate will have:

Experience of working in a boarding school

  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • A good general level of education
  • Knowledge of the statement of national minimum standards for boarding      schools (NMS) and OFSTED/ISI Inspection criteria would be advantageous
  • A positive and sympathetic approach to children
  • Ability to work as part of a large team

As a thriving boarding foundation, we have seen our numbers grow year on year, making us one of the largest boarding communities in the country. Our facilities are enhanced annually to help ensure that we have everything needed to allow our young people ‘to be the best they can with the gifts that they have’ (our Hill Standard).

Applications from teaching candidates are welcomed, but we cannot offer a teaching timetable.

Principal: Mr Steven Jandrell BA

This school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment.  You will be required to undertake an enhanced DBS disclosure.

Please note that the accommodation provided is only suitable for a single person, we do not have accommodation suitable for a family or pets.

We would like to thank you in advance for your interest in Queen Ethelburga's Collegiate.  However, due to the high volume of applications that we attract it will not be possible to respond to every application that we receive.  If you have not heard from us within two to three weeks of the closing date, please assume that, unfortunately, on this occasion you have not been successful, and we wish you every success for the future.
