About Bedford School
Bedford School is one of the UK's leading independent boarding and day schools, educating over 930 pupils aged 7 to 18. Part of The Harpur Trust, Bedford's leading educational and social welfare charity, the school combines academic excellence with outstanding pastoral care, exceptional co-curricular opportunities and a strong sense of community.
For almost 475 years, Bedford has been educating and inspiring young people. While we are proud of our heritage, we are equally ambitious about our future. From September 2027, Bedford School will become fully co-educational, welcoming girls and boys throughout the Prep and Upper Schools. This exciting new chapter builds on our long-established strengths while creating new opportunities for pupils, staff and the wider community.
Set within a beautiful 50-acre estate, Bedford is a school of uncommon breadth and belonging. Large enough to open doors academically, socially and beyond the classroom, yet close-knit enough to know every pupil well, the school is recognised for helping young people develop the confidence, character and skills to thrive in an ever-changing world.
Boarding remains at the heart of the Bedford experience. Around 180 boarders live alongside day pupils, creating a vibrant and connected community that extends well beyond the school day. It is a place where relationships matter, where people know and support one another, and where there is a genuine sense of belonging.
Our curriculum is broad and ambitious, offering GCSEs, IGCSEs, A-Levels and BTECs alongside distinctive academic extension, leadership and entrepreneurship programmes that encourage intellectual curiosity and critical thinking. At Bedford, young people explore widely, commit deeply, and grow the confidence to make thoughtful choices about who they are and what matters to them.
Beyond the classroom, pupils benefit from outstanding facilities, including a purpose-built Music School and Theatre, an observatory and planetarium, extensive sports facilities and specialist learning spaces. Whether through sport, music, art, drama, leadership, service or community partnerships, pupils are encouraged to engage fully in school life and make a positive contribution to the world around them.
Working at Bedford

Whether you are at the start of your career or seeking your next leadership opportunity, Bedford offers extensive professional learning, mentoring and development opportunities. We encourage innovation, welcome new perspectives and support colleagues in pursuing their ambitions.
Most importantly, working at Bedford means being part of a community with a shared purpose: helping young people flourish. Whether in the classroom, in boarding houses, on the sports field, through the co-curricular programme or in one of our professional services teams, every member of staff plays an important role in shaping pupils' lives and experiences.
