Job overview

Founded in 1843, Marlborough College is the largest co-educational full boarding school in the UK with 962 pupils, aged 13 to 18 years. The College is academically ambitious, offering a contemporary, challenging and enriching education where service to others is of profound importance.

The College offers a fast paced, modern education which is inclusive and diverse. It is proud of its Anglican heritage and is situated in an historically significant setting at the western end of the Wiltshire market town of Marlborough. It occupies 286 acres of stunning and significant landscape. The Marlborough Mound, a man-made structure dating back to 2,400BC, lies at the heart of the campus and the school itself is built on the ancient palace of King John.

The College now seeks to appoint a Bursar who will play a vital role in the life and future of this unique school. He or she will be responsible for the effective management and leadership of the College’s day-to-day support functions, including financial management and reporting. The Bursar will be an important strategic voice in the Senior Management Team, supporting the Master on a plethora of issues ranging from the day-to-day to the long-term strategic. Encompassing responsibilities ranging from the Governance and future strategy, to ensuring best-in-class infrastructure and IT, to engaging with College stakeholders including parents and the local community, this is a multi-faceted and broad ranging role.

The successful candidate will be an exceptional leader with a track record of success in their chosen field and will be intellectually capable and curious with the gravitas to operate at Board (or equivalent) level. He or she will be keen to play a visible role in the life of the College, engaging with the support staff, to whom they will provide open and inspirational leadership, proving an innovative and financial strategist who has a thorough understanding of the challenges faced by the sector.

The Bursar will be committed to safeguarding and promotion of the welfare of children. The College will require them to pass an Enhanced Disclosure DBS check.
