Minerva's Virtual Academy is a unique online independent school for pupils in Year 9 and above. Founded in December 2020 we have become the fastest-growing independent school in the UK and recently won the 'Market Entrant' Award at the Education Investor Awards 2021. Due to our rapid growth we currently have a part-time employed opportunity for an experienced and inspiring teacher of business studies & economics with the potential to teach at all levels from years 9-13, to start in August:

We are looking for a teacher with these essential skills and traits:

  • Experience teaching GCSE and A-level
  • Experience teaching groups of students
  • A strong desire to ensure all pupils succeed, and an understanding of strategies to support those with SEND and mental health difficulties
  • Knowledge and experience of a range of teaching approaches and techniques
  • Strong diagnostic ability and a passion to guide pupils in their learning
  • A  strong understanding of the assessment requirements
  • The ability to engage pupils from varied backgrounds
  • A belief in the value of homeschooling
  • An enthusiasm for making the most of technology in education

We would especially like to hear from anyone with these additional highly desirable skills:

  • Qualified teacher status
  • Experience teaching IGCSE and international A-level
  • Experience creating highly engaging learning content for online delivery

Some of the responsibilities this role will include are:

  • Teaching weekly lessons sets of up to 20 pupils
  • Creating and uploading online content for pupils
  • Marking completed assignments for pupils promptly and providing helpful feedback
  • Answering pupil queries via email
  • Hosting regular drop-in sessions to allow pupils to ask questions 'face-to-face'
  • Writing the end of reports on pupils' progress
  • Attending fortnightly staff meetings on Wednesday to keep up to date with the rest of the faculty
  • Exam invigilation and preparation
  • Attending parent evenings

While these are not the only tasks you'll be required to carry out as one of our teachers it gives a good outline of what you can expect day to day. There is also the opportunity to become a Mentor who is an ally to individual pupils on their educational journey. Mentors meet with each pupil individually once per week for 30 minutes and oversee their learning across all subjects, involvement in school life, pastoral well-being, and future plans. Mentors complete a short feedback form for parents after each meeting, liaise with subject teachers and the Headmaster/Deputy Head/Designated Safeguarding Lead about any issues or identified needs and are contactable by pupils via their @minervavirtual.com email address.

Benefits of the teacher role include:

  • Good rates of pay for a part-time opportunity available with growth into a full-time position
  • Support in creating incredible online content and schemes of work
  • Online group classes teaching experience
  • Training in the use of our online learning platform
  • Membership of a teaching faculty with active opportunities to develop skills and share good practice
  • Opportunity to develop skills in one-to-one mentoring

Please feel free to explore our website, which includes recent news and pupil/parent testimonials. If you have any questions relating to this opportunity please direct these to recruitment@minervavirtual.com,  please do not email CVs directly as they will not be considered an application for the role.

Interviews will take place immediately and so the role may be filled before the end date.

All teachers will be required at training days on Thursday 1st and Friday 2nd September.

It is the perfect school for modern times - combining smart technology and engaging online resources with one-to-one support, active group learning and exciting multi-disciplinary projects.

We offer pupils the flexibility to learn from the comfort of their home, anywhere in the world, while ensuring they develop the social skills required to live fulfilling lives and succeed in the workplaces of the future.

The skills we champion are self-sufficiency, collaboration, problem-solving, creative and critical thinking, leadership, and mindfulness.

We operate term dates broadly in line with those in the independent school sector.

Our curriculum for Years 7 and 8 takes advantage of Key Stage 3's flexibility. Alongside the foundational curriculum, students encounter a diverse array of topics. The key stage 3 curriculum combines the Inner core subjects of English, Maths, and Science (Cambridge Lower Secondary) and the outer core is made up of History, French, German, Spanish, Global Perspectives, Digital Literacy, PSHE, Classical Civilisation, Computing, Music and Art & Design.

Pupils commonly study between 5 and 9 subjects in Years 9-11 and 3 - 4 subjects in Years 12-13. These include a combination of the core subjects: Maths, English Language, English Literature, Biology, Chemistry and Physics - and electives: Geography, History, Business Studies, Psychology, Global Citizenship, Computer Science, French, Spanish, Art and Music. All of our courses (with the exception of Psychology, Art and Music) are IGCSEs awarded by either Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel.

How Pupils Learn

Pupils learn through a combination of modules on our online learning platform, small group live lessons that take place for one hour per fortnight per subject, and the support of a personal mentor (again one hour of dedicated time per fortnight, after which the mentor writes an update report for parents). In addition to their subjects, all pupils take part in our cross-curricular World Changers sessions for one hour per week, Well-being for half an hour per week, Assembly for 30-40 minutes per week, and a Club for one hour per week. Pupils studying 9 subjects can therefore expect to have 8-9 hours per week of live contact time, and they structure and complete their self-guided work via the online platform around these sessions.
