Job overview

Self-Employed Cantonese Chinese Tutor

Hours of work:  2-6 hours per week (flexible outside teaching timetable)

We are seeking to recruit a passionate and driven individual to extend Whitgift’s flourishing languages provision by tutoring pupils in Cantonese. The successful candidate will have experience of teaching the Cantonese Chinese GCSE and more advanced qualifications (either A-Level, Pre-U or IB), and should hold a relevant degree. An ability to teach Mandarin Chinese in addition would be an advantage.

As a diverse and internationally minded school preparing pupils for the challenges of the twenty-first century, Languages naturally play a central role in our curriculum. Pupils currently learn three (from Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, Latin, Spanish, German or French) on entry to the school with over half taking two at GCSE and almost the same proportion opting to pursue a modern language in our Sixth Form.

Alongside these curricular languages we seek to support pupils off-timetable in languages where they already have some prior knowledge, thus obviating the need for them to attend Saturday language schools. We have a number of pupils of all ages (11-18) with some background in the Cantonese language whom we would like to support in furthering their understanding. There may also be scope to extend the role to the teaching of pupils with no prior knowledge and perhaps to run a Cantonese club.2

We welcome applications from all parts of our community as we aspire to attract staff that match the social and cultural diversity of our student intake.

For further information and an online application form, please visit www.whitgift.co.uk/vacancies  For any queries, please telephone the Human Resources Department on 020 8688 9222 or email SchoolHR@whitgift.co.uk

Applications will be reviewed daily and we invite interested candidates to apply as soon as possible.

Closing Date: Midday on Tuesday 26 November 2019

Interviews: Week commencing 2 December 2019

Whitgift School (part of the Whitgift Foundation) is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people and vulnerable adults and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.  Where applicable, applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.
