Job overview

We are seeking to appoint a Careers Advicor to work in a boutique private independent college in Mayfair, central London. The person appointed will report directly to the Principal/Director of the college.

Albemarle Independent College is an award-winning sixth-form college offering highly successful A-level & GCSE programmes for 16 – 19 year olds, and also a wide range of sports and enrichment activities. Students are taught in small groups and they benefit greatly from individually tailored help outside of classes. All students progress on to universities here in the UK or in the USA/Europe.

The Career Advisor's Role

Will consist of

  • 4 hours per week (Hourly Rate TBC negotiated with the Principal)
  • Speaking to the Lower Sixth cohort on Weds 2pm when required
  • Conducting one to one zoom meetings with individual students
  • Interview students one-to-one or in small groups to discuss their career or education options with a view to helping them consider degree options
  • Listen to their ideas and career aims
  • Identify skills gaps and how to deal with them
  • Help students identify and consider the range of choices available to them and outline possible ways forward

The candidate will have

  • Experience of delivering career advice to the 16-18 age group
  • Have knowledge of the where the students can access supporting information
  • Excellent communication skills – these should include active listening, alongside aptitude for verbal and written communication
  • A non-judgmental manner
  • The ability to motivate people
  • Analytical skills – including the ability to take someone’s interests, experience and preferences, alongside your knowledge, and develop considered suggestions.

About Albemarle Independent College

Based in the heart of Central London, Albemarle College is an independent college offering broad GCSE and A-level programmes together with revision, retake and refresher courses.

Albemarle has a reputation for excellent A-level results. Every full-time, two year A-level student has achieved a 100% pass rate with grades of A, B or C. Students are taught very much by traditional methods, in small groups, concentrating on the skills needed to pass examinations and to be successful at university.

All tutors at Albemarle are subject specialists and most have experience as examiners. They are particularly successful with young people: able to motivate and communicate with them in ways which they understand.
Barriers are quickly broken down, enhancing the learning process

Class sizes at Albemarle are kept small - the average is four to five students, with a maximum of eight in each class. Tuition is very much centred on the students who are encouraged to participate fully and, most importantly, to think for themselves

Each student has an initial consultation with one of the Principals to establish goals and objectives, plan a strategy for sitting examinations (particularly important for modular courses) and to ensure that the correct subjects are chosen.
