Caterham Education Centre 

Part of the Aurora Group, Caterham Education Centre (CEC), in Caterham, Surrey is currently looking to recruit an Careers Teacher. CEC is a 30-place secondary/post 16 learning centre supporting young people aged 11 – 16 who have difficulties with communication and social interaction, typically associated with Asperger’s Syndrome and Autism, and challenging behaviour. 

 

CEC is linked to Aurora Redehall School they share the same Headteacher and Senior Management Team, however each site has its own Assistant Head and team of Teachers and TAs. Although the sites operate separately on the whole, students do cross between sites occasionally.

 

Overall purpose: 

Providing high-quality career guidance in schools is vital to young people so they can make well-informed decisions on their future. The role of the careers and transition teacher is to embed the Gatsby Benchmarks into our small specialist secondary school.

Key duties:   

  • Devise and deliver a programme of impartial careers and transition advice, tailored to the needs of different year groups and individuals to support them to make informed and realistic decisions, based on self and opportunity awareness, aspirations and motivation.  
  • Plan and implement a programme which introduces students to a broad range of relevant career options to help them to broaden their horizons and understand the breadth of opportunities they may wish to explore and pursue. This may include teaching lessons/liaising with other subject teachers, organising speakers, visits etc.  
  • Ensure students and families are supported to understand the opportunities for further study or training across SEN and mainstream settings. This will include identifying and signposting to relevant colleges/ organisations and their open events. 
  • To provide opportunities for students to experience post-16 options through a range of activities such as taster days, college or employment placements.   
  • To work with students and families to help them understand the process for application, support them in the application process and in the transition to their next step. To work closely with the SENCo and Curriculum team to enable this process. 
  • Work with students and curriculum teams to help students to understand the links between taught curriculum and qualifications and ‘the real world’.  
  • To support students to achieve their ‘Preparing for Adulthood’ EHCP outcomes and targets working with curriculum leads, parents and students.  
  • To support with teaching and learning when required.  

 

General duties 

  • Ensure that pupils are properly safeguarded and understand how to make a referral to the schools Designated Safeguarding Officer
  • Supervise the work of any support staff who are assigned to work with the post holder’s pupils.
  • To take responsibility for implementing school policies and practice, including those relating to safeguarding and equality of opportunity.
  • Exercise open and respectful communication with families, co-workers, supervisors, and other school staff
  • Measure progress and accomplishments of students towards their academic achievements on a regular basis and provide progress reports as required
  • Create and keep records on attendance, accidents, incidents, and other noteworthy events in accordance with Aurora’s policies and procedures
  • Attend conferences and workshops in order to further advance your own professional development, as well as complete Aurora’s own training modules
  • Provide a safe, thriving, and respectful environment for all students in the classroom and across all of Aurora’s sites

Knowledge and experience

  • Relevant knowledge and experience of pupils with ASD, SEMH and other SEN
  • Understanding of the Safeguarding principles and Child Protection procedures
  • Experience working within secondary/tertiary education desirable
  • Experience of managing a range of approaches to behaviour, including de-escalation techniques 
  • A solution- based mind-set
  • Able to communicate effectively with students, parents, colleagues and external organistions
  • A full, clean driving licence
  • Strong IT skills
