Job overview

We are a large primary school, which is part of the Lingfield Education Trust (currently comprising 6 schools in the Tees Valley). We are looking for a caretaker who can support and enhance our learning environment and oversee the day-to-day management of the school site, ensuring a high level of hygiene and safety is maintained.

The successful candidate will be required to:

  • Unlock the school gates in the morning before school starts and ensure the site is clean and remains secure.
  • Lock the school gates in the afternoon after school and ensure the school is secured after all staff have left for the day.
  • Undertake general caretaking and maintenance duties, e.g. changing lightbulbs, collecting waste and refuse, and making temporary repairs to broken windows.
  • Work with the school's cleaner(s) to ensure internal and external areas remain tidy and safe.
  • Assist in the decoration of the school, e.g. before school fairs.
  • Assist with the maintenance of the school garden areas.
  • Advise and collaborate with the Headteacher/School Business Manager to develop and improve internal and external areas of the school site.
  • Ensure stock levels are maintained on items such as paper towels, toilet rolls, lightbulbs and paints etc.

The successful candidate will:

  • Have excellent organisational skills
  • Be punctual
  • Communicate well and be confident managing others
  • Have good teamwork skills
  • Respect confidentiality and the potential sensitivities of working in a school, e.g. safeguarding laws
  • Experience of working in a school would be desirable but not essential
  • Be able to demonstrate in their application that they can fulfil the main duties of the job description and person specification as a minimum


The pattern of working is split shift, from 7am to 10.3 am each morning and 2.30pm to 6.30pm in the evening (6pm finish on Friday) with some possibility of overtime to cover lettings.
