Job overview

We seek to appoint a College Chaplain to join our team here at Shebbear College. The successful candidate is likely to be a Methodist Minister although applications are welcomed from other ordained or lay candidates who feel they can fulfil the role. If the successful candidate is a Methodist Minister then the stationing will be for five years. There is also the possibility that the successful candidate will become the co-ordinating Chaplain for the three MIST schools in North Devon and North Cornwall (the others being St Petroc’s School, Bude and Kingsley School, Bideford)

Shebbear College is a relatively small (350 pupils from 3-18) co-educational independent day and boarding school set in 85 acres of North Devon countryside. The school benefits from the security and camaraderie of its membership of MIST (the Methodist Independent Schools Trust) and enjoys a sound financial base.

Shebbear College is a Methodist Church foundation. Its Governing Body is accountable to the Methodist Conference. The school, in promoting its Christian values and ethos, welcomes among its staff and pupils people of all Christian traditions, of other faiths and with no explicit religious faith. The post makes demands upon the incumbent, which have to be recognised from the start. In particular the Chaplain should have a pastoral ease and wisdom which commends itself to pupils, staff and parents and there must be a willingness to be on the spot and wholly involved in the College community. By being about and proactively available the Chaplain can make an impact. He or she should be able to bridge the gap between pastoral care and discipline, between the professional therapist, with all the labelling and dependency that can flow from them, and the wisdom, judgement and sound common sense of a Christian leader. Additionally there must be acknowledgement of the round-the-clock demands that some boarding pupils can make. The involvement of pupils and an appreciation of the value of a broad approach to spirituality is important; - recognition that young people do not like being preached at is crucial. It is not possible to outline a complete list of duties and actions to be undertaken by the Chaplain but he or she is expected to adopt flexible working patterns, which meet the needs of all pupils. This appointment is made within the terms of reference of the Methodist Independent Schools Trust policy on School Chaplains and the relevant sections of the document adopted by the Trust are applicable.

BENEFITS OF SERVICE

Ø In addition to working in a small friendly school in a stunning rural location we will offer a competitive remuneration package (basic stipend + 20% as announced by Methodist Conference) which also includes:

Ø Accommodation on site, including bills (there is maximum allowance of £2,000 per annum for oil heating and electric, which is taxable).

Ø Free lunch and refreshments during term-time

Ø Medical centre on site during term time

Ø Free use of the School facilities such as gymnasium

About Shebbear College

Founded in 1841 and steeped in history, Shebbear College is a thriving day and boarding school for girls and boys aged 4 to 18. Our 85-acre campus is situated in the beautiful Devon countryside, close to Exmoor and Dartmoor National Parks and the fantastic surfing beaches of the North Cornwall coast.

Life at Shebbear is busy, filled with academic purpose, co-curricular activity, creative discovery and outdoor adventure - we believe in a broad, extensive education where pupils excel in all areas of the curriculum. Our talented staff and ambitious pupils together form a happy, caring community that challenges, innovates and develops a love of learning.

Our smaller size means that our staff know all of our pupils individually, enabling each child to discover their own strengths and find the confidence to shine. Every pupil is different and our team of passionate and committed teachers will find their spark and discover what motivates them, meaning that each pupil can develop their potential and feel empowered to be the very best they can be - academically, socially and morally.

Shebbear pupils consistently achieve excellent A-level, BTEC and GCSE results year-on-year.  We are proud to be a non-selective school and we believe that our pupils succeed because they are happy at school. The mix of our pupil-centered curriculum, our dedicated teachers, the individual attention and the extensive range of co-curricular opportunities on offer are key factors in this success.

At Shebbear College you will find confident, courageous, compassionate, creative, curious and courteous pupils who will welcome you with open arms!
