Job overview

Dean Close Senior School is a co-educational Boarding and Day  School's set on a beautiful 50-acre site on the edge of Cheltenham.  Situated on the site are the Senior, Preparatory and Pre-Preparatory schools which share many of the fantastic facilities. The  Senior school is currently 500 pupils between the ages of 13-18, approximately 260 of these pupils are boarders. It regards itself as a Christian school which celebrates a good number of Christian parents and staff. At the heart of the School’s ethos are its biblical values of love, courage and contribution enabling the flourishing of every pupil and member of staff.

We are passionate about giving each child the opportunity to hear the Good News of Jesus Christ and to find out more about what following Jesus means whilst they are at school.

The Chaplaincy

At  Dean Close the Chaplain, The Revd John Ash,  is responsible for the spiritual life of all five Schools across the Dean Close Foundation parts (Pre-Prep, Prep and Senior Schools on the Cheltenham site, Airthrie School and St John’s on the Hill, Chepstow) and has male and female Chaplain’s Assistants working with him across the Cheltenham Schools.

In the Senior School the Chaplain’s Assistants act as the permanent presence of the Chaplaincy, and work alongside the Chaplain and the many members of staff who are involved in the Christian activities at school.

Our aim here is to present the Gospel and encourage children in their relationship with Jesus in an accessible and relevant way, whether it is through our dynamic and multi-media services, the more formal Chapel Services, encouraging children to encounter God in prayer meetings, in House Bible Studies, Assemblies or through the three Christian Unions (CU). (Approximately 70 children attend each week).

A large part of the job will flow from the building of good relationships with the children and staff, including in the boarding community. Being around for children at different times of the day will be vital to achieve this, as will being in the Common Room on a regular basis.
