Job overview

Dean Close School is a co-educational, day and boarding school, set in a beautiful 50-acre site on the edge of Cheltenham and currently has c500 pupils between the ages of 13-18. Approximately 60% of these pupils are boarders. Founded in 1886, the School has a strong Christian ethos and greatly values its positive environment and good relations between staff and pupils. Situated on the site are the Senior, Preparatory and Pre-Preparatory schools which share many of the fantastic facilities on offer, including a £3m Sports Hall, purpose-built Music and Art Schools, water-based astro pitches and a 550 seat professional Theatre. We celebrate a good number of Christian parents and staff. At the heart of the School’s ethos are its biblical values of love, courage and contribution enabling the flourishing of every pupil and member of staff.

We are passionate about giving each child the opportunity to hear the Good News of Jesus Christ and to find out more about what following Jesus means whilst they are at school.

At  Dean Close the Chaplain, the Revd John Ash,  is responsible for the spiritual life of all four Schools across the Dean Close Foundation parts (Pre-Prep, Prep and Senior Schools on the Cheltenham site, Aithrie School and St John’s on the Hill, Chepstow) and Chaplain’s Assistants working with him across the Cheltenham Schools.

In the Senior School the Chaplain’s Assistants act as the permanent presence of the Chaplaincy, and work alongside the Chaplain and other teaching members of the Chaplaincy team who are involved in the Christian activities at school.

Our aim here is to present the Gospel and encourage young people in their relationship with Jesus in an accessible and relevant way, whether it is through our regular Chapel Services, prayer meetings, house Bible Studies, through our annual school mission, and through the large and vibrant voluntary Christian club (the HUB).
