The Role

To support and develop the College's Catholic mission and ethos in all aspects.

The main duties and responsibilities of this role include:

  • Working with students, staff and governors to help maintain and develop the College ethos based on Catholic principles and values.
  • Ensuring the college continues to observe the Catholic liturgical year and to plan and lead opportunities for students and staff to worship.
  • Providing pastoral support to students liaising closely with other members of the College’s pastoral support system.
  • Supporting bereaved students and staff.
  • To be welcoming and available to all members of the College community, in the belief that addressing the spiritual dimension, demands care of, and interest in the whole person.
  • To support links with the wider church and community, in particular with partner schools, Lancaster Diocese, parishes and external agencies.
  • To engage with the Diocesan Education Service to effectively implement the Bishop's vision for Chaplaincy in Catholic education.
  • To attend appropriate meetings/gatherings

The Successful Candidate

Cardinal Newman College is a wonderful place to work, and this is an exciting opportunity for a enthusiastic and experienced candidate to join our friendly and well established Chaplaincy department. 

The Chaplaincy department is looking for someone who is a practicing member of the Catholic Church, has proven ability in relating well to young people and to all those involved in their education and be sufficiently confident enough with his/her own faith journey to support and encourage others at whatever stage they may be in their own journey in faith.

You should display the values, attitudes, and behaviours consistent with the Catholic Ethos of the College and have a commitment to equality/diversity and the safeguarding of young people and vulnerable adults.

Terms and Conditions

Hours: 37 hours per week, term time only. Starting and finishing times as agreed. Part time requests will be considered.

Salary: The post will be paid on the Sixth Form Colleges’ Support Staff Pay Spine at points 19 to 23- pro rata to £35,158 to £39,441 per annum. Actual Salary £30,335.47 to £34,030.98 per annum.

Based in the heart of Preston city centre, Cardinal Newman College is a Catholic Sixth Form College. Our core activity is to provide education for students aged 16-18, offering a range of A-Level, BTEC and T-Level courses, at both level 2 and 3. The College also offers a Foundation Learning course for young people with specific learning needs. In addition to the 16-18 provision, Cardinal Newman also offers a range of University courses, including Foundation Degrees in Teaching and Learning Support and Early Years, as well as an Initial Teacher Training programme. Cardinal Newman College is the post-16 provider of Initial Teacher Training for the Catholic Teaching Alliance, for graduates looking to get into teaching.

An Outstanding College 

Cardinal Newman is one of the highest performing sixth form colleges nationally for Value Added and the latest Ofsted Inspection in February 2023 graded all areas of the College as ‘outstanding’. The report confirmed that students have highly positive attitudes to learning. Attendance is very high and students are committed to their studies and are highly motivated to achieve. The College has high expectations where students are at the heart of the curriculum. Inspectors also commented that leaders are highly considerate of staff well-being and workload and that staff morale is exceptionally high. Staff feel the college is well led and managed and that they are trusted and valued by leaders. They describe a strong ethos and culture to support students to achieve their aspirations, illustrating that the Catholic mission and ethos of the College is lived out at all levels.
