Job overview

A member of the GEMS group of schools and the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) École des Roches is one of the oldest, most prestigious and well-established independent boarding schools in France. The GEMS Group and the Directeur Général Délégué now invite applications for the position of Chef d’Établissement Adjoint(e) (Deputy Headteacher) to help lead the School through a period of significant change.  With over 300 pupils (6-18) and 165 staff, the School, which is set on a spectacular 50-hectare campus approximately one hour from central Paris, is experiencing significant growth and has recently embarked on a major multi-million euro building programme. The School is now equipped with a brand-new 6-million-euro Dining Hall. The next phase will be the build of a state-of-the-art Teaching Centre (the plans for which are already in the final stages) and ultimately world-class facilities for Sport and the Visual and Performing Arts. The boarding houses have undergone a dramatic programme of refurbishment to the very highest standards.  Academic results at French Baccalaureate level are good and are available to view on the School’s website. In recent years, on average 65% of students were awarded the French Baccalaureate with Distinction. Of those who followed the Literature Stream 85% attained their award with Distinction. For the past three years the IB Diploma has been offered as well. There is an extensive extra-curricular programme including horse-riding and aviation.  The majority of École des Roches students take up places at leading universities and higher education institutions in France and around the world, including the Université Paris-Dauphine, the Lycée Henri IV Paris, the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, the Ecole Hôtelière de Lausanne, and the Georgia Institute of Technology in the USA. 2017 saw the first IB Diploma candidate invited to pre-interview for a place at Oxford University.  The School is looking to appoint from July (or August 2020 at the latest) an outstanding, bilingual French-English, Chef d’Établissement Adjoint(e) (Deputy Headteacher). The Chef d’Établissement Adjoint(e) will have day-to-day pedagogical responsibility for the entire school including the Primary, Collège and Lycée and including both the “hors contrat” and “sous contrat’ sections of the School. This is a key post reflecting the significant developments currently being undertaken at École des Roches and as such the ideal candidate will be an ambitious colleague of significant experience, including international experience, who will work closely with, and report directly to, the Director General/Chef d'Etablissement. The School is reviewing its curriculum and many of its internal structures, and the successful candidate will be a key player in this process and will be responsible for developing strategies to support staff performance, enhance student outcomes and foster independent learning. He/she will also be required to take an active role in staff development and training. The successful candidate may have a small teaching commitment. He/She should be able to teach his/her subject up to and including Baccalauréat français and IB Diploma level (including the one-year Pre IB Programme) and demonstrate excellent subject knowledge and a passion for raising attainment and expectations. He/she will also have the ability to inspire colleagues and pupils and maintain a commitment to the high standards and  work ethic of our school. Candidates should be flexible, hold a relevant degree, a recognised teaching qualification and be prepared to participate fully in the boarding, academic and extra-curricular life of the School. In-depth knowledge and considerable senior level experience of all areas of the curriculum, including the IB Diploma, are essential. Experience of boarding and of international boarding standards such as those of the BSA would be a distinct advantage. The School has its own competitive salary scale and enjoys a dedicated administrative staff team. Applications with a covering letter and a CV of no more than three pages should be sent as soon as possible and no later than  30 April 2020 to the Directeur Général Délégué at directeur.general@ecoledesroches.com from whom a detailed job description and further information can be obtained. You are kindly asked to enter “Chef d’Établissement Adjoint(e)” as the subject of your email. Information about the School can be found at www.ecoledesroches.com

Founded in 1899 by the sociologist Edmond Demolins, École des Roches is an exclusive co-educational day and boarding school located in the small town of Verneuil-sur-Avre, in the heart of the beautiful Normandy countryside. We welcome students aged from 6 years to 18 years of age to our Primary, Middle and High school.

We have educated generations of illustrious students over the years. Our education philosophy is as innovative as it was one hundred years ago. Based on universal and deeply humanist values, we work with each and every student to promote their love of learning, awaken their intellectual curiosity, and develop them today to prepare for the rest of their lives.

Against the backdrop of an expansive and beautiful campus approximately an hour from Paris, and built on the foundations of an unrivalled heritage, École des Roches is now entering a period of ambitious growth and development not only in terms of its curricular and pastoral provision but also in terms of its physical facilities for teaching and learning and for boarding.

Underpinning everything that we do, is the aim that each pupil not only gets fulfilment and enjoyment from their school years but leaves the school with an understanding and value of self and with the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed at university and in the wider world. That success depends not only on high academic and extra-curricular achievement but also on having acquired the necessary human skills and values that will enable them to operate in a global society.

The responsibility for nurturing the development and well-being of each individual pupil in this way extends beyond the classroom and our ambitions for the education of our pupils can only be fully realised through working effectively in a spirit of partnership between home and school.

École des Roches is part of the GEMS Education global network of schools providing innovative education programmes in 250 schools worldwide.

Teachers at École des Roches, as in all GEMS schools, are expected to hold more than just a degree or appropriate teaching qualification. Prospective teachers are given a one-on-one interview to talk about their teaching preferences and passions, and are well supported during their time at school in order to further their skills and familiarity with the curriculum.
