Job overview

Apply now for an exciting opportunity to teach Chemistry A level at our unique college!

About us:

Westminster Tutors is an Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ independent sixth form college based in South Kensington.  Established in 1934, we have a longstanding reputation for academic excellence and we continue to outstrip our competitors in the DfE A level Performance Tables.  We remain close to our tutorial college origins and teach mainly at A level with much of that teaching continuing to be one-to-one.  The college is small and friendly, staff morale is very high and teachers find their work with us immensely satisfying.  In turn, our students are mature and committed and their behaviour is exemplary.

What we are looking for:

We are looking for a talented teacher of Chemistry (part-time) to join our team in September 2020.  We are able to offer our part-time teachers very flexible timetables according to their other commitments, but we do normally require teachers to be available for at least two half days a week.  Many of our part-time staff are also working on PhDs, or are musicians, artists and writers.  Others have had high-powered careers in education or academia and now wish to teach part-time in a rewarding and stimulating environment.  The diversity and range of accomplishments amongst our teachers all contribute to the unique atmosphere at Westminster Tutors and provide a source of inspiration for our students.

The successful candidate will ideally be a qualified teacher, although this is not a requirement.  We place greater importance on you having strong academic credentials and require a good degree/ postgraduate degree in Chemistry or possibly Biochemistry/ Pharmacology, as well as a proven ability to engage and inspire students aged 16+.

Our students have a very broad range of ability.  Additional experience preparing students for highly competitive UCAS applications would be an advantage.  Additionally, experience teaching A level students with SEND such as dyspraxia and the autism spectrum would be an advantage.

Coronavirus update:

Westminster Tutors re-opens its doors to students in September 2020 and will be offering flexible A level and A level retake courses on site or online. We are small, safe and socially distanced because we have decided that we will do all of our teaching one-to-one this year.  Our approach also means that we can seamlessly move to teaching online in the event of another lockdown.  We have conducted a rigorous risk assessment and are asking our teachers to teach on site but we believe we are able to offer a much safer working environment due to our small size and approach.  Our current staff have also said that they have found our consultation process very reassuring.

Application Process:

If this sounds like the job for you we would love to hear from you!

Please fill in all the fields on the TES Quick Apply form and include a brief, relevant statement in support of your application to Westminster Tutors.

We will only contact candidates who have been successfully shortlisted for interview.

Interviews: suitably qualified applicants may be interviewed prior to the closing date.  Interested applicants should therefore apply ASAP.

Thank you for your interest in Westminster Tutors.

Safeguarding:

Westminster Tutors is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

Prior to an appointment being made, applicants will undergo enhanced child protection screening relevant to the post, including checks with past employers and the DBS.

Westminster Tutors was founded in 1934 and is one of the oldest remaining tutorial colleges in the country.  The college now operates as an independent sixth form college admitting students aged 16-25 and, while it was originally based in Westminster, it is now situated in South Kensington in two Victorian terrace houses.

Westminster Tutors retains its long-standing reputation for academic excellence and offering highly qualified tutors who ensure each student reaches their full academic potential.   Much teaching is still one-to-one, while some classes are offered in very small groups of two or three students.  We have high aspirations for all of our students and our approach speaks for itself: attainment, added value and onward higher education destinations are exceptional.

The maximum capacity at the college is 45 students, which means each student receives superb pastoral support according to individual needs, and staff find their work highly rewarding as levels of engagement are so high.  The college has a strong ethos of inclusion and a good number of students have special educational needs, mental health needs or neurological differences such as autism or ADHD.  Westminster Tutors is academically non-selective and admissions are therefore based on whether the student has academic aspirations and motivation in line with the college’s offering and whether we are able we are able to meet the student’s individual needs through our strong system of pastoral support, which includes mentoring for students with additional needs.

Our staff find their work truly rewarding due to the very high levels of engagement and the fact that they can enjoy the impact that their expertise and commitment has on each and every student.  The students' behaviour is exemplary and they love being at the college, while 100% of our parents would recommend us.

Westminster Tutors really is a unique institution and it is a pleasure to work for us!
