School 21, a 4 to 18 school with a growing reputation for innovation and impact, is opening a new Sixth Form and Middle School in September as well as building up to full capacity. We are looking for a pioneering Chemistry teacher with A level and GCSE experience but also with a desire to collaborate on rich, real world learning, with other subject disciplines.

Science comes alive at School 21 as students grapple with the big ideas that underpin the world around us. Teachers plan challenging and exciting projects, develop thinking skills to a high level and foster collaborations with other subjects across the curriculum. Recent science projects have included STEM projects and a genetics and drama project: is it ever right to play God?, a physics and art project with students designing and making mini-golf courses using mechanisms and electronic components, and an immersive Jack the Ripper tour featuring Virtual Reality film and live demonstrations of Victorian criminology techniques.

School 21 is an all-through school and your focus will be the secondary phase, with a particular emphasis on teaching chemistry within our new sixth form, Six 21 and also at GCSE. Ideally, you will be an experienced A-level chemistry teacher and it is essential that you have a passion for developing the best pedagogy for that age range.

Within the sixth form, we will seek to pair students with experts and experienced professionals in various scientific fields to undertake research, on-site projects, or work placements. Our aim here will be to stretch our students beyond the A-level course and to give them opportunities to experience science at the cutting edge of discovery. You will work alongside the other science teachers in an inspirational department to develop the curriculum and schemes of work. You will analyse student data to identify underachievement and develop intervention strategies to ensure all students make outstanding progress.

You will be trained in and develop a range of pedagogies including oracy-rich learning, project based learning, coaching, advanced literacy techniques and using technology effectively in the classroom. English Language is central to the life of School 21, and all teachers are expected to develop reading, writing and speaking skills within their subject. Our oracy curriculum, teacher toolkit and our collaboration with Cambridge University has resulted in a school filled with purposeful talk and thinking. You will have the chance to shape this exciting area of the school’s culture, along with the ethos and core practices of the sixth form.

ABOUT SCHOOL 21:

  • 4 to 18 mixed, inclusive school in the heart of Stratford, Newham
  • Cutting edge pedagogy and curriculum
  • Small - only 75 children in each year group. From September 2017 we will have years 7 to 11, Reception to year 4, a new Sixth Form beginning and a Middle school starting for years 5 and 7 in the first year and years 5 to 8 in the second year.
  • We have plans to set up two new schools in close proximity to School 21 which will give staff more opportunities to grow and develop.

The mission of School 21 is to empower young people to take on the world. Through a rich curriculum of ‘head’, ‘heart’ and ‘hand’ we want children knowing a lot, understanding themselves and making things happen. Our ‘dialogic approach’ to teaching helps children learn through talk and learn to talk and give everyone a voice.

We think schools should be places where children craft stunning work with real products, for real audiences and as a result of real teacher collaboration. Over the past few years our students have created immersive theatre productions depicting the French and Russian revolutions, built mechanical toys bursting with scientific craft. They have spoken out about human rights, ran campaigns to improve the biodiversity of Stratford and charted local history through photographs and poetry. Student work has been critiqued by directors and historians, professors and artists. All work is displayed, celebrated and challenged at termly Exhibitions of Beautiful Work where children tell us their stories of learning, drawing on their deep wells of oracy and well-being.
