Job overview

Following the retirement of one of our long-serving senior Chemistry teachers, we are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced teacher to join our highly successful Chemistry department at Albemarle Independent College.

Albemarle has an exceptional reputation for achieving excellent A-level and GCSE results, considerably above the national average. The Chemistry department attracts mainly students who wish to pursue medical sciences, and we can count a large number of doctors, dentists, pharmacists, vets, biochemists and also chemical engineers amongst our successful graduates. We also run a highly successful Medical Sciences Programme (MSP) which helps to prepare students for entry into medical science professions.

Applicants should have at least 5 years relevant teaching experience, and be prepared to teach A-level, AS-level and KS4 GCSE Chemistry. The ability to teach KS4 GCSE Physics as well would be an advantage.

Albemarle is based in the heart of Mayfair in central London, and virtually all students progress on to universities in the UK or USA. Most students have high aspirations and so excellent exam results are a key USP of the college. We also prepare students for aptitude tests such as UKAT and BMAT. Teaching is in small groups of no more than 8 students. The college is inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI), from whom we have received an outstanding commendation for the last 3 years.

Salary: £36,000 (4 days/week)

(provision to increase to 5 days/week after 1 academic year)

About Albemarle Independent College

Based in the heart of Central London, Albemarle College is an independent college offering broad GCSE and A-level programmes together with revision, retake and refresher courses.

Albemarle has a reputation for excellent A-level results. Every full-time, two year A-level student has achieved a 100% pass rate with grades of A, B or C. Students are taught very much by traditional methods, in small groups, concentrating on the skills needed to pass examinations and to be successful at university.

All tutors at Albemarle are subject specialists and most have experience as examiners. They are particularly successful with young people: able to motivate and communicate with them in ways which they understand.
Barriers are quickly broken down, enhancing the learning process

Class sizes at Albemarle are kept small - the average is four to five students, with a maximum of eight in each class. Tuition is very much centred on the students who are encouraged to participate fully and, most importantly, to think for themselves

Each student has an initial consultation with one of the Principals to establish goals and objectives, plan a strategy for sitting examinations (particularly important for modular courses) and to ensure that the correct subjects are chosen.
