Job overview

Role: 

To provide technical support to the School’s Chemistry teaching staff in the delivery of class practical experiments and teacher demonstrations . 

Duties:

  • Assembling equipment required for lessons, from information provided by the teachers, from the course books or from the technician notes
  • Setting up demonstrations of Chemistry principles, from information provided by the      teachers, from the course books, from the technician notes or from research on the web.
  • To carry out safety checks on equipment before and after use. 
  • To deliver equipment to classrooms; collect, check and return equipment to stores after lessons
  • To trial practical activities. 
  • Prepare chemical solutions following standardized methods
  • To clean equipment used in practical. 
  • To assist with the general cleaning of the laboratory sinks and benches; tidy and clean Prep. Room shelves etc. 
  • To treat and dispose of spills and breakages safely. 
  • To ensure laboratories are locked, lights and equipment are switched off at the end of the day. 
  • Assisting with the day to day administration of safety and in keeping the lab tidy      and safe. 

Other responsibilities: 

  • Maintaining the chemical use log and regular stock checks.
  • Maintaining stock levels of consumables and keeping an inventory of equipment.
  • To ensure adequate stocks of chemicals, glassware, goggles, Bunsen burners etc. in laboratories. 
  • To maintain laboratory equipment, apparatus and resources, carrying out (or arranging for) the repair and replacement as necessary. 
  • To help maintain and produce displays for laboratories and public areas in Science corridors
  • To assist the department with displays; open evenings; production of leaflets, posters, photographs etc.
  • To keep up to date with current Health and Safety regulations by attending courses, reading relevant literature etc. 
  • To provide advice on safety issues and ensure staff have copies of Hazcards etc. and Risk Assessments for practicals
  • To store and check expiry of hazardous substances. 
  • To dispose and disassemble redundant and unsafe equipment. 
  • To carry out Health and Safety checks in laboratories, prep rooms and stores and keep logbooks.
  • To operate and maintain stock control of equipment, undertake annual stock-take and ensure stock book is kept up to date.

Assisting other technicians in Physics and Biology, where required, under direction (i.e. helping to move apparatus and equipment).

About Lewes Old Grammar School

Lewes Old Grammar School is an independent, co-educational, all-through school in East Sussex. The historic town of Lewes has a population of 17,000 and is known for its annual bonfire festival. 

The school can trace its roots to an educational foundation started by Agnes Morley during the reign of Henry VIII. At its last inspection there were 509 pupils on the school roll, between the ages of 3 and 18.
