Do you have a passion for learning and the skills required to lead one of Scotland’s key education organisations?

The General Teaching Council for Scotland became the world’s first independent professional regulatory body for teaching in April 2012. It has been Scotland’s teaching regulator and professional body for teachers since 1965. Its principal aims are:

  • to contribute to improving the quality of teaching and learning; and 
  • to maintain and improve teachers’ professional standards.


The Chief Executive and Registrar has a significant outward facing role with the public and other key stakeholders and must be able to represent the GTC Scotland and the teaching profession with authority and credibility. You will be responsible for ensuring the effectiveness, efficiency and integrity of the organisation as its delivers its statutory functions and works to achieve its bold world-class vision. You will have outstanding leadership and inspirational skills and the capability to translate organisational vision into deliverable objectives. Able to demonstrate significant achievements at a senior management level, you should have experience of operating in a high profile, public facing capacity. Candidates must be registered or eligible for registration with GTC Scotland.

The General Teaching Council for Scotland is the independent regulatory body for the teaching profession in Scotland. 

We were set up in 1965 under the Teaching Council Scotland Act following concerns that entry requirements had lowered after the Second World War and unqualified teachers were working in Scottish Schools.
