Job Description
City Academy is seeking an experienced Principal with the passion and energy to help create a world-class school that is an outstanding learning environment for our students, faculty, and staff, and that is a model of best practices for public education. We are looking for an innovative educational leader who functions successfully in an independent school environment. Our new Principal will be the face of the school and will help create an inspiring, focused school culture that attracts, retains, and graduates successful young people with post secondary educational aspirations.

Opened in fall 2000, City Academy is a public 7th – 12th grade charter school in downtown Salt Lake City dedicated to helping students achieve academic and personal success, fostering responsible citizenship, and inspiring a lifelong love of learning. We offer a high quality real world education at the heart of the city. With our location right in Salt Lake City, near the state capitol building and legislature, and at the base of the University of Utah campus and the Wasatch Mountains we utilize these valuable community facilities and resources to augment and make whole our educational and extra-curricular activities and programs.

Our Principal will focus on strategic direction and development of the school working in collaboration with the Executive Director, lead teachers, and counselor to plan, manage, and lead the school’s day-to-day operations and student programs, including Cambridge International Exams. The Principal will provide core leadership to maintain the tone and culture of the school and build community in a variety of ways. The Principal supports teachers in classroom management, discipline, safety, and differentiated student behavior interventions; maintains school attendance and discipline programs that provide clear expectations, a system of positive reinforcement, and sequential, consistent, progressive consequences for violations of school policy; communicates proactively and constructively with staff, students, and parents; implements school-wide support and recognition programs for student success; and assists with student recruitment efforts.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate for City Academy Principal will have the following qualities, experiences, and qualifications:

  • Previous successful experience in high school teaching and in providing inspiring purposeful leadership for faculty.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and sustain an innovative, creative, and exemplary school that attracts, challenges, and retains students and quality teachers.
  • Demonstrated success in helping form and implement school-wide improvement efforts that create a culture of personal excellence.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a school in achieving improvement goals and securing continuous school improvement.
  • Excellent communicator able to articulate the vision and strategic mission of the school.
  • Dynamic, positive leader that builds trust and forms effective collaborative working relationships with a highly diverse group of students, parents, faculty, and staff
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with students, teachers, and parents to ensure that all those involved in the school are committed to its aims and motivated to achieve them.
  • The ability to thrive and lead in a small, independent school environment.
  • Administrative certification in Utah with a graduate degree in education or school administration. Must be able to maintain certification as required by Utah state law.
  • Broad knowledge of principles and practices of school administration, Utah state law concerning public secondary schools, and current best practices in student discipline and support.
  • Preference given to someone with Spanish ability, and/or experience leading a successful advisory program.

Salary Range: $68,000 - $73,000 annual

City Academy is a mixed, non-selective, non-denominational independent secondary school with sixth form in the United States of America, serving students from the age of 11-18. The secondary school is situated in Salt Lake City, Utah.

City Academy was founded in 2000, by teachers from the University of Utah’s College of Education. It is currently the only secondary school in Utah to offer International exams as part of an advanced placement programme, seeing pupils sit IGCSE and I A levels, which are recognised around the world.

The secondary school hopes that pupils leave education equipped with the knowledge, skills and positive attitudes to go on to lead a successful and enriching life. Active citizenship is practiced throughout school life and pupils are taught of their role as compassionate members of society. Initiatives throughout the year practice, with a service project placed on the curriculum as a requirement to graduating, which sees them choose a charity to support. It is vital to the school that pupils feel valued and benefit from a personalised education so that they can reach their full potential across the curriculum, something that is achieved through having small class sizes. A wide range of extra-curricular activities and opportunities are available for pupils across the year group to get involved in and gain new skills, meet new friends and embrace their existing talents and hobbies. These include sports, art, music and drama classes.
