About Dulwich Hamlet Junior School

Dulwich Hamlet Junior School is now part of The Charter Schools Educational Trust, a family of four primary schools and two secondary schools serving communities across the London Borough of Southwark.

Dulwich Hamlet Junior School is situated in the heart of Dulwich Village. In 2011 we became a primary Academy. The site consists of five main buildings. Two large Victorian buildings contain the main classrooms; attached to one of these is a newer well-appointed building (with high ceilings) joined on to it by a glazed link. This building - Pickwick - contains three classrooms, a new library, well-appointed staffroom, and the Mac suite.

We have an Admin building that contains our main and back offices, well staffed with School Business Manager, and Admin Officers. The school office and reception is sited near the main entrance to allow for greater accessibility. Our Purcell Rooms contain the music classroom, music practice room and Steel Pan Room. Griffin Hall houses our amazing dining hall and Design Technology Suite. We have a number of small rooms used for working with special needs children, and our SENDCo’s Office.

Our intake is 90 children per year with three classes to each of the 4 year groups. We are always oversubscribed. There is a tradition of music and performance in the school. We have choirs, brass ensembles, recorder consorts, strings and woodwind orchestras. Over 70% of children take instrumental lessons at school. We have good resources, for example, many, and varied, musical instruments. There is a Year 6 end-of-year performance and throughout the year we take part in various concerts and events. Each class runs its own class assemblies twice a year. The children vote representatives on to the Houses and we have a developing Pupil Voice structure.

We take part in many sporting events and have won a number of trophies. Children enjoy the fun of ‘Enrichment’ afternoons in the summer term, learning anything from car maintenance to The Great Egg Race! There are many after school clubs, such as sports, cookery and art. Year 5 and Year 6 children enjoy residential school journeys. Visitors and trips out are regular events in all year groups.

There is a very strong local community and parents are highly supportive of their children's education and the school. The Governing Body is actively involved in the work of the school. Some parents help in class, with reading or on trips. Events are well attended and the PTA is successful in organising interesting and 'fun' fund-raising events.
