Job overview

This is a unique and exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and committed teacher of Learning Support to be part of a team that is developing a new Communication Provision in East Lothian for secondary aged pupils with autism and communication difficulties who require a highly individualised and adapted approach to teaching and learning. The Communication Provision is part of Knox Academy, known as Meadowpark, which is a short walking distance away and provides places for pupils from across the county. Staff and pupils are based in a beautiful converted former Victorian building which was formerly home to Haddington Infant School.

The Provision offers pupils and staff extensive facilities including a sensory room, activity room, fully accessible meeting area, staff base, therapy rooms as well as generous outdoor space and ICT support. There is also a fully fitted apartment for pupils to develop independent living skills as they reach the Senior Phase.

The staff team is key to the success of this new provision as pupil numbers increase over time to a maximum of 30.

The successful candidate will be a member of a new and dynamic team and must be enthusiastic and energetic. Candidates must have the ability to communicate their experience and enthusiasm to engage pupils that have Communication difficulties mostly related to Autism and associated challenging behaviours. Learning will take place either in the classroom setting or offering continuity for pupils with particular challenges that may involve working 1:1 or with small extracted groups intensely.

Proven experience of working with vulnerable young people, some of who may require personal care is essential, as is the ability to be flexible to deliver alternative curriculum opportunities for pupils, both in and off the school campus. Candidates who have a wide range of teaching experiences across the stages of additional support needs, upper primary and/or secondary are welcome to apply. Specialism in Maths/Science curriculum would be highly desirable but not essential. Candidates must have a commitment to ongoing professional development.

Located in East Lothian, Scotland, Knox Academy is a co-educational secondary school. Named after a 16th century theologian, Knox Academy can trace its roots back to the 14th century, but is more directly descended from a 19th century grammar school. The school has seen extensive redevelopment over the years, and has around 800 pupils in total, making it average-sized compared to other secondary schools of its type. The school can boast of a wide range of modern teaching and recreational facilities, including a gymnasium and large laying fields.

Values and Vision

Knox Academy runs an asymmetrical school week, making it unusual compared to many other British schools. Monday to Thursday, pupils attend six periods a day finishing at 4pm, whilst on Fridays they only attend three periods, leaving school at midday. The school works hard to provide a diverse curriculum suitable for all pupils, taking great pride in its comprehensive ethos. Outside the classroom, the school runs its own “Children’s University” for younger students, with them taking part in trips and learning opportunities in conjunction with a local university.

Education Scotland Inspection

“The headteacher is successfully engaging with a range of partners in the local community, including businesses. These partnerships successfully enhance the curriculum and increase young people’s successes and achievements. As a result of the school’s increasing community links, young people are engaged in volunteering and develop their leadership skills through working with local organisations.”
