About Alexander McLeod Primary School

Our School

Alexander McLeod is a large primary school based in Abbey Wood in the Royal London Borough of Greenwich. The school is popular in the local community and currently we have approx. 590 pupils on roll.

There are currently 3 classes in reception, through to Year 6, 21 classes in total. The school is extremely well resourced with a total of 78 employees.

We provide a rich curriculum and feel the school is an exciting place for your child to learn. We have a dedicated early years block so that when children join us they are in a self contained unit. There is an established settling in period when children join us in September. Children learn indoors and outdoors which includes a large outside space devoted to Forest Schools. Children are supported to make a positive transition into Key Stage 1 at the end of their first year.

Once children are in the primary school they enjoy all aspects of learning where children have the opportunity to participate in a variety of curriculum areas. We concentrate on literacy and numeracy skills and provide many opportunities to link these skills across the whole curriculum including art, science, ICT and humanities.

There are a wide range of extra curricular activities provided for children before and after school.

Ofsted

When Ofsted last came to visit, they said the following about our school:

“Alexander McLeod is a good school, where pupils are well prepared for their future lives. Parents and carers are overwhelmingly positive about the school, with many placing particular value on the support given to pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities and the approachability of teachers. One parent, echoing the views of others, wrote, ‘Staff are always around and available to any child or parent in need.’ The good care that staff readily give to pupils ensures that they always feel very safe at school and this contributes to their enjoyment of school and above average attendance.

Pupils make good progress during their time at the school.”

School History

Alexander McLeod Primary school was built in 1903 and was called Bostall Lane School. It was renamed after one of the founding members of the co-operative movement. Abbey Wood has a long history associated with the Co-op with many of the local streets named in connection with the Co-op.

Some well known former pupils include: Wing Commander Owen Truelove who flew his glider from England to New Zealand in the 1990s, Robert Cox who is currently a children’s author and former world snooker champion Steve Davis.
