Job overview
Currently, Midlothian has 6 secondary schools, 30 primary schools (19 of which have nurseries) and 2 stand alone nursery schools. Our special school, Saltersgate, provides support for children with a range of physical, social, emotional, behavioural and learning difficulties. The schools range in size from our smallest primary school with around 20 children to our largest secondary with over 1200 pupils. We have a diverse range of school catchments, from rural to urban settings. We are fortunate to have a growing number of new build schools, with 13 of our primary schools and 1 secondary having been built within the last 10 years and several new builds planned.
Mayfield Nursery School is at the heart of the community in Mayfield. It currently offers 100 part-time places with 50 children attending in the morning and 50 children attending in the afternoon. The nursery is open plan and has a large garden area. We also have a designated I CAN Communication Specialist Provision where additional staff cater for a number of Midlothian children who have specific language impairment. I CAN staff work in the nursery alongside other staff, supporting I CAN children in their language and learning. To enrich the communication environment for all children in the nursery all staff in the nursery use ‘signalong’ sign language.
We are a welcoming and inclusive school where all children are valued and nurtured and where parents and carers work together as partners with professionals. We respond to the varied needs of individual children and families in order to provide effective support for development and learning. At the heart of children’s learning at Mayfield are quality play opportunities which support, challenge and extend children’s learning and involve well-judged and skilled adult interaction.
The staff team have worked hard over a number of years to develop a range of support for children and families to improve outcomes for all. This includes training in the Solihull approach, the Hanen Programme, I CAN Early Talk. We also use approaches such as Music and Me to help children develop emotional literacy and strategies to support children to develop emotional self-regulation. We enjoy involving parents in the life of the nursery and the “Friends of Mayfield Nursery School” both informs and supports our work.
Applications are invited from enthusiastic professionals who have the vision and energy to sustain and promote the current standards of achievement and ensure the continued development and progress of the school.
Interviews for the above post will take place week commencing 07 November 2016
