Job overview

Beormund Primary School is a specialist provision supporting children with complex social, emotional and mental health needs. We educate and inspire children who have been excluded from at least one mainstream setting so they often arrive disillusioned, disengaged and with a dissociation to school and learning.  As engaging and empathetic adults, it is our role to establish what our children excel at. We nurture their curiosity and improve their self-confidence so that they are then able to recognise and celebrate making mistakes. We want our children to flourish – academically, emotionally and socially - and experience the joys of learning.

We are an SEMH primary school where children are taught the National Curriculum and make accelerated levels of academic progress in order to reach their Age Related Expectations. You will do this by leading a small team of support staff as you educate and empower up to 8 children in your class. Learning is personalised, lessons should be fun, engaging and purposeful. We look beyond behaviours in order to recognise the function they serve as we strive for children to be able to verbalise their thoughts, feelings and emotions.

This role would suit a confident and successful primary practitioner, with a secure understanding of teaching and learning who would like to stay in the classroom but needs a new challenge in their career.

You will become part of a dedicated, cohesive, diverse and supportive team who are all committed to improving the life chances of such vulnerable children and their families.  We offer a school where nothing surprises you and no two days are the same.

We are looking for a class teacher who:

o Recognises the importance of relationships.

o Has a natural curiosity to learn more.

o Is patient, determined, resilient, inspiring and emotionally intelligent.

o Has a concrete understanding of how children learn - recognises that children learn differently and can personalise learning to meet the needs of each child.

o Can use distraction and diversion techniques in order to address challenging behaviours.

o Can look beyond the behaviours in order to establish how a child can be nurtured & further supported.

o Has high expectations of themselves, their class team and the children they teach.

o Is able to make an impact on the teaching and learning beyond their classrooms – to drive whole school initiatives in order to improve outcomes for children.

o Has a sense of humour and wants to have fun in their role.

o Demonstrates professional resilience as you will invariably be faced with tough situations.

o Knows how to protect their own emotional wellbeing and mental health.

o Is confident to make mistakes and is a reflective practitioner.

o Enjoys and strives for a healthy work – life balance.

o Understands the impact of trauma and Adverse Childhood Experiences would have on a young child’s behaviours and subsequent life chances.

o Wants to reengage and inspire those who have previously been excluded from mainstream school(s).

Note:

Virtual pre-visits & tours and/or a discussion with the Headteacher can be arranged prior to submitting your application. Onsite visits will be arranged for successful candidates shortlisted prior to accepting the job.
