Appointment of Classics Junior Fellow

Winchester College seeks to appoint a Classics Junior Fellow from September 2023. The Winchester College Graduate Trainee Teacher (Junior Fellowship) scheme is an exciting opportunity for graduates considering a career in education. The Junior Fellowship is offered annually on a fixed one-year basis to recent university graduates and has been designed to provide aspiring teachers with the support and training they need to be become excellent practitioners both in and outside the classroom.

Winchester College wishes to recruit someone to join its enthusiastic, friendly and energetic Classics department. An ability teach Latin to A-Level is essential, and Greek highly desirable. We are looking for someone with an excellent familiarity with Classics in all its variety, a great love for the subject, and an ability to inspire enthusiasm in others. We value highly reliability, strong organisational skills and careful planning and preparation. We would particularly welcome someone who has a passion for Classics outreach work.

Should you be appointed, you would be joining a department of eight teachers. Classics at Winchester is a flagship department: Latin is a popular subject, with almost two-thirds of pupils choosing Latin GCSE, and two sets per year in the sixth form; Greek usually attracts 15-30 a year in the lower school and we have a continuers’ and a beginners’ set each year in the sixth form; about 10 pupils per year go on to study classical subjects at university (many at Oxbridge). You would be joining the department at a particularly exciting time: the introduction of A-Level Ancient History in September 2023 will help us provide a broader classical education which might appeal to new audiences; the expansion of the sixth form is enriching our sets with excellent new boys and girls; promising Classics outreach initiatives (including a weekly Greek club for local pupils) are enabling us to spread the good news about the ancient world more widely and to make even better use of our fantastic classical collections.

About Winchester College

Winchester College was founded by William of Wykeham, Bishop of Winchester, in 1382. The school currently has 700 pupils. In September 2022, the College welcomed 40 day pupils, including 17 girls, into the Sixth Form and will continue to do so, over time expanding the entry each year to up to 50 girl boarders. The number of pupils boarding at the College will remain the same.
