Job overview

Classics Teacher – Latin and Classical Civilisation

Salary £28,989 – £42,650 pro rata per annum, dependent on experience

Permanent

Full time (from 0.75 FTE would be considered)

A first-rate teacher and well-qualified graduate of Classics is required to join our thriving department from September 2023. You will deliver Latin and Classical Civilisation across the age and ability range, including to Oxbridge entry. The ability to offer Ancient Greek would be highly desirable, but is not essential. Creativity, imagination and empathy are vital personal attributes, as is the enthusiasm to inspire and promote a love of Classics, both inside and outside the classroom.

The Department

The Department currently comprises a full-time Head of Classics and several part-time teachers. Classics at Woodbridge is vibrant, exciting, and successful; pupils are enthusiastic and highly motivated. In 2021/22, 80% of GCSE Latin candidates gained a grade 9 or 8, which is typical of results over the last five years. Outcomes at A-Level are equally high, with 100% of Latinists gaining A*/As since 2018/19 (78% at A*). Recent Classical Civilisation grades have been 100% A*-B (33% A*, 33% A, 33% B). In most years sixth form pupils go on to degree courses at Oxford, Cambridge, or Russell Group universities, studying a range of courses in Latin and Greek, Ancient History, Archaeology or Classical Civilisation.

All pupils take Latin in Year 7 and 8 (using the Cambridge Latin Course in Year 7 and de Romanis in Year 8). Around 2/3rds of the year-group continues with Latin in Year 9 and there is good take-up at GCSE. Greek is available where numbers allow (two are taking AS this year, and two took A2 two years ago, both gaining A*s). Greek is taught to the top sets as part of the Classics provision in Year 8 and 9 and some pupils in Year 10 will be taking the Intermediate Greek Certificate.

Classical Civilisation is currently taught only at A-Level. Creative and extra-curricular activity within Classics is very high. Recent successes have included First Prize in the Girton Humanities LVI Essay Competition, Second and Third prize in the PLP Mythology Creative Writing, and 2 out of 5 winners of the Cambridge Ancient Worlds Audio-Visual competition. The Department prides itself upon encouraging a culture of academic and creative excellence, and there will be many opportunities for a successful candidate to contribute to this culture.

Clubs

Internally, the Department provides a Junior and Senior Classics Club. Junior Classics Club offers hands-on activities, such as mosaic-making or pottery. Senior Classics Club supports pupils to explore their specific interests, and recent activities have included a student-led film of Antigone. The Head of Classics also runs the FitzGerald Programme (the school’s academic enrichment programme for academic highflyers). The Department offers trips to museums, lectures and theatres

Resources

The Department has a welcoming and stimulating learning environment, with one specialist classroom and a smaller room, used for Sixth Form teaching. These are situated next to the Modern Foreign Languages department. Some Sixth Form teaching also takes place in the Sixth Form seminar rooms.

Woodbridge School

Set in the beautiful town of Woodbridge in Suffolk, Woodbridge School comprising our Pre-Prep, Prep and Senior School was established in 1587.  An independent co-educational day and boarding school for ages 4 to 18, the original mission of the School was to provide an education for the young who would then give back to their community, thus enriching it and them all; this is embedded and continues in all that we do today.

Woodbridge School, including our Prep, Senior School, Sixth Form and Boarding, has been rated ‘Excellent’ in all areas by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) 2023.

Combining the best of tradition and innovation, our curriculum delivers the perfect balance of life skills, creative challenges and academic excellence.  Woodbridge School offers an education that shapes itself around each student, ensuring they become everything they are meant to be.  Our Prep School is a caring nurturing, lively and inspirational introduction to School, inspiring and investing a true love of learning in children.  Our Senior School offers the perfect balance of creative challenges, academic excellence as well as interpersonal and social skills, for life throughout School – and beyond.

Every opportunity at Woodbridge School

Students have access not only to an excellent education but to a wealth of pastoral care, co-curricular activities, societies and sport.  From learning hockey with a double Olympian, working with precious metals and fabrics in Leatherworking and Silversmithing, to attending Chess lessons taught by an International Chess Master, learning and exploring new techniques in Maths challenges, experimenting for fun in Science Club, developing performance skills in LAMDA and debating with our MUN club, there is something for every student.

‘Pupils develop excellent skills in the broader curriculum through a wide-ranging programme of extra-curricular activities.’ ISI Report 2023

Collaborative relationships

We expect students to work hard, develop the ability to work independently and to achieve excellent results as they have done this year; their superb GCSE and A level results reflect both the achievements and successful collaboration of and between our students and teachers; our students confirming their relationships with teachers is one of the main reasons they choose to stay on to study A levels at our Sixth Form.

We monitor progress carefully and provide targeted support when necessary, and always keep parents proactively informed, encouraging you to feel easy about contacting us at any time about any matter.

Clear vision and values

Of course, preparing young people for life means much more than just excellent grades.  It means young people developing strong communication skills, the ability to lead and work with others and, above all, a self-confidence to positively contribute to the society in which they live.  This means at Woodbridge, what happens outside of the classroom is just as important as what happens inside.  Offering parents and students clear vision and values, which guide dynamic, respectful, high-achieving students to not only find their path but to fulfil their potential; at Woodbridge your child’s journey is our entire focus.

A flexible, comprehensive system of bus routes

With a number of minibus services operating daily throughout the local region, Woodbridge School offers a comprehensive system of bus routes reaching across Suffolk as well as Essex.

Full and weekly boarding

For those living further afield, the School offers full and weekly boarding options.  Boarders form a vital part of the community at Woodbridge School, with everyone supporting and learning from one another.
