Learning should be fun. This is the principle at the heart of life in the Junior School and Nursery.

The Junior School and Nursery is a purpose-built, state of the art facility opened in September 2012. All the classrooms on the ground floor, where Nursery and Reception classes are situated, open out onto the grounds so the children can work and play together in their own safe areas, moving inside and out depending on the weather and activities.

Our pupils are able to explore the grounds of the wooded six acre site, seeing the natural world first hand and watching the seasons unfold. We have adopted an innovative education approach to outdoor play and learning in the woodland environment taught by a Skogsmulle trained teacher.

Dame Allan’s Junior School offers a broad and balanced curriculum in which the core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science are strongly promoted in all year groups. From Reception, French is introduced as a first foreign language taught by a specialist. Lessons in all subjects are well structured and varied which maintains the children's interest, enthusiasm and motivation and there are many educational visits to enhance the children’s learning. Our extra-curricular programme is vital in enhancing children’s skills and enjoyment in learning and there are many clubs, activities and sports to choose from.

Dame Allan’s Schools were founded in 1705 by Dame Eleanor Allan, the daughter of a city goldsmith and the widow of a wealthy tobacco merchant, to provide a ‘proper’ education for 40 poor boys and 20 poor girls in the city parishes of St Nicholas and St John.

These days Dame Allan’s provides a first rate education for young people from all cultures and backgrounds within a supportive environment informed by the Schools’ Christian foundation and traditions, where pupils are encouraged to make the best use of their many and varied abilities.
