Colyton Grammar School Academy Trust are seeking a Clerk to the  Board of Trustees.  This person must be pro-active and organised and will be the trust board’s governance professional.

This role is essential for the effective functioning of the board, in helping the board understand its role, functions and legal duties and the provision of clear impartial advice.

A critical part of this role is to support the Chair and the board to enable and facilitate strategic debate and decision making sure that the board can fulfil its core strategic functions:

1. Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction. 

2. Holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the performance management of staff; and 

3. Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent. 


To do this the Clerk will be required to organise meetings, circulate papers and take minutes.   But this role is about much more than recording the discussions and decisions of the board, it needs to ensure that the trust is meeting its statutory requirements.  The Clerk will be expected to provide expert advice to the board on their compliance with the Articles of Association, funding agreement and with relevant legislation and regulations.

Some of the main aspects of this role are:

• Administrative and organisational support.

• Guidance to ensure that the board is compliant with the appropriate legal and regulatory framework and understands the potential consequences for non-compliance.

• Advice on procedural matters relating to the operation of the board.

• Assist the Chair in making sure that board understands what is expected of them and that they receive appropriate induction, training and development.
