Job overview

Cambridge, Hybrid

We are seeking a highly motivated publishing professional with an avid interest in developments in physics education and research to join our team and commission new products.

We are Cambridge University Press & Assessment, a world-leading academic publisher and assessment organisation and a proud part of the University of Cambridge.

Our physics book programme is renowned globally for its quality, breadth and variety. Spanning best-selling undergraduate and graduate textbooks, cutting-edge research overviews and practical how-to volumes, our portfolio showcases titles from the world's most eminent physicists.

About the role

The academic publishing industry is going through an exciting period of change, with technological developments and new business models radically changing the way our content is created, presented and delivered. The role will provide the opportunity to apply your skills, market knowledge and business acumen to shape and build the physics list, helping the Press to remain at the forefront of scientific publishing and serve the needs of students, instructors and researchers.

Key responsibilities will include, though not be limited to:

  • Building a high level of engagement within the international academic community through in-person and online meetings, conducting market research on the latest research and teaching directions to inform new product development, including Open Access and digital courseware initiatives.
  • Commissioning a target of 15-20 high quality projects per year – upholding rigorous editorial and peer-review standards, supporting authors through the writing process and overseeing each project through to timely and successful publication.
  • Employing sound project management and financial planning to meet ambitious sales and profitability targets and contributing to the strategic development of the physics programme.
  • Reporting to the senior commissioning editor for physics and working alongside six other editors in the Physical and Life Sciences team. An appointment will be made at a level commensurate with experience and on-the-job training will be provided.

This is your opportunity to make an impact! If you don't want to miss out, please take a look at the job description attached at the end of the advert. We want to hear from you.
