Dunottar is a co-educational school for pupils aged 11-18 set in extensive grounds of 15 acres on the outskirts of Reigate. With a new Headmaster in September 2017, the school is on a very exciting journey.  The school is experiencing fast growth in pupil numbers and is currently in the process of a £6.6 million capital development programme.  A new Sixth Form Centre has recently been completed and a whole school Assembly Hall is due for completion in October 2020

Dunottar is a great place to work, with a team of highly professional and committed teachers and support staff.  We incorporate best practice from independent schools and academies right across the United Learning Group, whilst retaining our unique, friendly ethos in Reigate where pupils are nurtured to make significant personal progress at the same time as achieving excellent academic results.  United Learning is an outstanding organisation which prides itself on providing a working and learning environment which encourages ‘the best in everyone’.  You will join a network of staff belonging to 60 other schools, with opportunities to engage with fellow professionals which far exceed what one school could achieve on its own.  Personal development and career opportunities are excellent. They will also play an active role in the extensive and varied co-curricular program, both during the working week and some weekends.

The Role

Dunottar School is seeking to appoint a part time or full time Teacher of Computer Science from 1st September 2020. The role would be suitable for an experienced teacher, a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT), PGCE/QTS. The successful candidate will be required to teach Computer Science at KS3, GCSE and A Level, as well as contributing to the department’s co-curricular activity.

The Computer Science Department

Computer Science is a growing department and a popular subject at GCSE.  We offer OCR GCSE and A Level courses in Computer Science.  The department has a dedicated Computer Science classroom equipped with Windows desktop computers.  All students and teachers have their own iPads which are used extensively across the school.

At KS3 students study a range of topics designed to give them a chance to develop computational thinking skills as well as a broader awareness of current technology and its applications.  Programming is taught in a variety of ways such as using BBC micro:bits, Sphero BOLT robot balls and Python.  Students create their own websites, designing their own graphics and coding in HTML.  They learn about wider topics such as encryption, artificial intelligence and privacy issues.

Our primary focus in the GCSE course is on problem solving and programming skills. Most programming at this level is completed in Python, though we also introduce students to SQL.  At A Level, we use Python as the main course language, supplementing it with other languages as appropriate such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, SQL and assembler (Little Man Computer).

In addition to the core curriculum, students take part in competitions such as for App design and the BEBRAS computational thinking competition. We offer enrichment through visits to various local companies; recent trips have included to Google’s London office and a cybersecurity department at a financial organisation.  We are keen to inspire students about future work and run Digital Careers evenings.

We have a thriving Lego robotics co-curricular club.  Our teams have entered into regional First Lego League competitions and have had recent success in London, winning a place to compete at the UK First Lego League Final in Bristol shortly.
