Strood Academy has a fantastic opportunity to appoint a Coordinator of Learning - Social Sciences from Easter 2023. We are seeking to appoint an inspiring teacher who is looking to take the next steps in their career and who will play a pivotal role in the progress and drive of this department. You’ll be joining the school at an exciting time as the rapid improvements we are making are gaining momentum and we can offer tailored CPD and opportunities within the academy and across the wider Trust in due course to suit you. 

Our ideal candidate will have the ability to teach Social and Cultural Anthropology ​​​​​​​(IB), Psychology (IB) and Health and Social Care (BTEC). Experience delivering Criminology (Eduqas) and Law (BTEC) would be desirable. Training can be delivered, where necessary, to upskill our successful candidate in the delivery of the IB programmes. ​​​​​​​

 Our successful candidate will be able:

  • ​​​​​​​To teach Social Science lessons to groups of students of all abilities across the school
  • To help raise the quality of teaching and learning in the department lessons across all Key Stages
  • To ensure that all lessons are planned with clear aims and objectives and delivered in line with the departmental schemes of work and school policies
  • To take into account the differing ability of students and differentiate work accordingly.  
  • To encourage all students to be actively engaged in their own learning and in reviewing their progress against targets.  
  • To encourage and foster intellectual curiosity.  
  • To deal with inappropriate behaviour quickly and effectively according to the school behaviour policy.  
  • To check that all subject matter is effectively communicated and understood by all groups of students.  
  • To set appropriate tasks and challenges for homework according to the published timetable, and ensure that it is regularly marked with constructive feedback.  
  • To keep careful records of student progress in line with departmental and school policy.  
  • To ensure that there is a high standard of display work in the classroom, which is changed frequently.  
  • To attend scheduled meetings in the Humanities Department and school
  • To work with colleagues in the Humanities Department to formulate plans which have coherence and relevance to the needs of the individual students and to the aims and objectives.​​​​​​​

What are we looking for in you? 

The Coordinator of Learning - Social Sciences role is critical to the success of the Academy in developing into a centre of educational excellence. It is the responsibility of all teachers to contribute to creative and expansive schemes of work and deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities to students of all abilities, thereby improving student outcomes in all key stages in this vitally important subject area.​​​​​​​

The successful candidate will receive;

  • A salary commensurate with the profile of the post + TLR 2c (£3,018)
  • Bespoke CPD with mentoring and coaching opportunities;
  • The opportunity to work laterally across a number of Leigh Academies Trust schools to benchmark best practice and to be involved in teaching and learning innovation;​​​​​​​

  • Centralised behaviour system and detentions - simple for teachers to follow allowing disruptive free classrooms.
  • Our commitment to the development of all staff - CPD on Wednesday afternoons and the opportunity to collaborate with staff from other schools in the LAT. Also all staff at Strood receive regular coaching feedback through our on-line platform on-track.
  • Strood academy is easily accessible by A2 and the high speed train can allow for travel into London in less than 30 minutes.
  • We have a common sense approach to workload. All teachers are expected to feedback or live mark. We also work closely as a Trust allowing for centralised resources to be shared across our secondary schools.
