Job overview

Millbank Academy, part of the Future Academies family, is looking for a committed and experienced Cover Supervisor/Higher Level Teaching Assistant to join our enthusiastic and knowledgeable team.

Millbank Academy (an Ofsted-rated ‘Outstanding’ school) is a state-funded primary school based in the heart of Westminster in central London. We are part of Future Academies, a Multi-Academy Trust, which includes three primary schools and six secondary schools in and around London. We are motivated by a mission of social change and reducing educational inequality: our school and Trust are unique in our approach to a knowledge-rich curriculum, and in our strong emphasis on raising children’s aspirations and outcomes through the teaching of classical and traditional subjects. Our children study a bespoke curriculum developed by writers at our Curriculum Centre, which places a focus on developing their cultural literacy and their awareness of the forces, words and events that have shaped our society today.  We subject-specialise at primary level, meaning that our primary children are taught by several different subject experts, as they would be in the private sector.  Millbank Academy serves children from the most socially deprived communities: our teachers can therefore make a dramatic impact on the lives of these children.

Your role:

• Cover lessons when teachers are absent, following guidance and planning provided by teachers.

• Teach spelling, using structured resources and plans (provided by the school), to whole class groups.

• Continue to provide 1-1 support for children with SEND, supporting curriculum access and academic progress.

• Provide support for pupils, the teacher and the school in order to raise standards of achievement for all pupils (e.g. SEND, EAL and all underachieving groups).

• Promote and support the inclusion of all pupils, including those with specific needs, both in learning activities and within the classroom.

• Organise and safely manage the appropriate learning environment and resources.

• Use behaviour management strategies, in line with the school’s policy and procedures, to contribute to a purposeful learning environment and encourage pupils to interact and work co-operatively with others.

• With teachers, evaluate pupils’ progress through a range of assessment activities.

• Assess pupils’ responses to learning tasks and where appropriate, modify methods to meet individual and/or group needs.

• Support the role of parents in pupils’ learning, including contributing to meetings with parents to provide constructive feedback on pupil progress, achievement and behaviour, whilst maintaining sensitivity and confidentiality at all times.

• Supervise pupils in the playground and plan and organise play time activities.

• Assist teachers by receiving instructions directly from professional or specialist support staff involved in the children’s education. These may include social workers, health visitors, language support staff, speech therapists, educational psychologists, and physiotherapists.

• Understand and implement school child protection procedures and comply with legal responsibilities.

• Any other duties required by the Class Teacher, SENDCo or Headteacher, which is within the scope of this post.

Person Specification:

• Experience working as an LSA or TA in a school, ideally for a minimum of 2 years.

• A degree or equivalent qualification and GCSE English and Maths at Grade C or above.

• Basic knowledge of first aid; e.g. emergency first aid course.

• Good knowledge of a range of learning barriers including special needs.

• Experience of contributing to, and assessing of, provision for children with a range of needs.

• Some knowledge of some of the social issues facing pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds.

• Dedicated to making a difference to the lives of our pupils.

• To be a positive, willing and adaptable member of the team at all times.

• Arrive punctually and maintain high standards of time keeping and reliability.

• Committed to the wider life of the school.

We can offer you:

• Access to the Pimlico-London SCITT, our Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ rated, classroom based, teacher training programme. We see this role as an excellent stepping stone for a career into teaching.

• Regular access to in-school training opportunities, which will develop your understanding of a wide range of Special Educational Needs as well as to further your wider professional development.

• A positive, friendly and welcoming environment.

Hours: 8.30am - 4.30pm, term time only
