Creative Arts Technician

We are seeking a motivated Art School graduate, practicing artist, or similar, who ideally will have some experience of working in an art room in a support/technician role, and/or tutoring senior school / college level students. With a core focus on supporting the Visual Arts teaching team and A-Level art students in our senior school, this role will also provide technical support across all our creative arts departments (Art, Drama & Music), for displays, exhibitions, productions, and performances, including set up and set building. An ideal opportunity for a creative person seeking to enhance their technical skills and career prospects in a varied support role for a large international school.

IMPORTANT: Applicants should have the ability to work in the Netherlands through citizenship, residency or a valid work visa.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Support and work with teachers to organise and prepare lessons, routine room and equipment checks between classes to replenish art consumables, and ensure the teaching room is ready for the next session
  • Draw up and maintain an inventory of equipment for the Creative Arts department
  • Maintain department resources, order materials and equipment, daily re-stocking, and general stock management
  • Stretching paper, screens, and canvases
  • Mount and hang exhibition work for GCSE and A Level exam programmes, including mounting & packing exam work for invigilation or storage
  • General preparation and organisation of presentation and display requirements
  • Assist with preparing classroom and corridor displays
  • Support with technical aspects of building structures and screen-printing for GCSE and A Levels
  • Demonstrate methods, techniques & best practice to students during lessons
  • Printing, scanning, copying, laminating, and mounting students' work and lesson resources
  • Carry out daily tasks as directed by teachers
  • Daily maintenance of all tools, equipment, storage, and sink areas
  • Maintenance and cleaning of equipment will include etching press, kiln, pug mill, clay extruder, slab roller, colour printer, and sewing machines
  • Manage regular safety inspections of machinery & equipment
  • Ensure safe and secure storage of all tools and equipment
  • Develop and maintain filing and loan system for e-sources
  • Support preparation for and set up of art exhibitions, drama productions, and musical performances
  • Work with students to build sets, make/source props and costumes for Drama productions (Autumn & Summer terms)
  • All other duties as reasonably requested by the Creative Arts faculty

Person specification

Essential experience, skills & abilities

  • Art background (degree qualification, practicing artist, or similar)
  • Study of Art at A Level (or equivalent level)
  • Working knowledge and experience of ceramics, wood, plaster, 3D/2D construction, set building, exhibitions, and art stock management
  • Manual / technical skills relevant to GCSE & A level Art requirements
  • Creative technical skills relevant to the technical set up of drama productions & musical performances
  • Proficiency in the use of ICT and software programmes used in schools
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students & staff, in a small group setting
  • Calm, encouraging, professional, and positive manner
  • Organized, self-managing, and able to work on own initiative
  • Strong attention to detail and quality standards
  • Available to work flexible hours to support school events, where required

Desirable experience, skills & abilities

  • Art graduate
  • First Aid qualification
  • Knowledge of sound & lighting, costume and set design
  • Experience working in a support/technician role (or similar)
  • Experience working with students in a school / college environment
