Job overview

Section: MPS/Mathematics/Huddersfield
Honley High School, Station Road, Honley, Holmfirth, HD9 6QJ

We are seeking to appoint an inspirational and enthusiastic curriculum area leader for our highly successful and well-resourced English department. We are looking for a candidate who is ambitious and creative, an effective classroom practitioner and who aspires to develop their leadership skills further within a supportive, forward thinking department. This is an exciting opportunity to take your career to the next level and we would be happy to receive applications from existing leaders in English, or those looking for their first role in leading a department. Outstanding support would be provided to ensure this person can develop into the role.

The successful candidate will lead a team committed to delivering a stimulating curriculum and maximising the potential of all learners through outstanding learning and teaching.  Candidates should be able to demonstrate a track record of high quality classroom practice, a strong team ethic, a commitment to their own continuous professional development and knowledge of the curriculum across Key Stages 3 and 4.

English is one of the school’s strongest departments in 2017 achieved outcomes in the top 3% nationally with a Progress 8 score of +0.81. The department is at the forefront of developing Learning & Teaching within the school and across our local network of schools. The successful candidate will be expected to promote and shape the team’s drive, ambition and reflective practice.

Honley High School has a strong reputation locally for academic excellence.  Pupils at Honley make “above average” progress compared with pupils of similar abilities in other schools and in 2017 we recorded a progress 8 figure of +0.17.  Honley High School is rightly recognised for its long-standing tradition of academic excellence and for its friendly, inclusive, caring approach to the needs of young people. We are very proud of what we do here, proud of our record of student and staff success, and proud of the young people our students become over the time they spend with us. Over a number of years the achievement of our students has gained us recognition as being among the highest performing non-selective schools in Kirklees.  We have over 1200 students and work hard to ensure that we get to know all of them as individuals, so we are able to support them through this crucial time in their lives.

Honley is within easy reach of Leeds, Sheffield and Huddersfield.

The successful candidate can expect:

  • A supportive and friendly team of experienced English teachers with an established track record of delivering excellent GCSE results
  • A commitment to their further development through a well-structured CPD programme
  • Motivated students who are eager to learn and engage in lessons
  • The chance to work with teachers, middle and senior leaders who are relentless in their drive to deliver the best learning experiences to their students. This will include the opportunity to contribute to pedagogy and schemes of work within the department, as well as share in the best practise of other schools

This is an excellent opportunity for a forward thinking and ambitious teacher to become part of a large and successful team which values high standards of academic achievement whilst developing the knowledge, skills and qualities needed to help students thrive in life and work.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. All staff are subject to an enhanced DBS check. A conviction may not exclude candidates from appointment but will be considered as part of the recruitment process.

If you require further information about the role, please contact the Mr Andy Matthews at the school on telephone: 01484 506484 or you can visit the school website at http://www.honleyhigh.co.uk

Closing Date is 9am Monday 26 March 2018.

Interviews are expected to take place week commencing 26 March 2018.

Vision and Values

Central to everything we are working to achieve is the school vision. We are striving to create an exceptional school where all members of the school community:

  • Are proud of the school, respectful of each other, socially responsible, and believe in and promote our values
  • Work within an atmosphere of mutual support, respect and collaboration
  • Are committed to individual and collective success and place no ceiling on aspiration
  • Celebrate effort as well as achievement, take risks and learn from mistakes, recognising the intrinsic value of learning
  • Place the needs of the child at the centre of learning, nurture their creativity in overcoming the challenges of today and develop their resilience to address the uncertainties of tomorrow

The exceptional school that we will create will be founded upon the following beliefs:

  • We believe in fairness, equity and inclusion: we value every child for who they are and show compassion and understanding in our dealings with one another
  • We strive for excellence in everything we do: we have high aspirations for everyone and believe that children and adults thrive in a climate of praise, celebration and recognition. We always measure ourselves against the highest standards
  • We believe in working together to protect the interests and well-being of all members of our community

We value working in partnership with others and in September 2019 we joined with four other schools in Kirklees and Calderdale to form the Together Learning Trust. This multi-academy trust, which replaces our previous Co-operative Trust status, has been founded on the principles of Integrity, Creativity and Excellence. Our expectation is that by working together as a family of schools we will be able to provide even greater opportunities for our learners and greater access to professional development for our staff.  We are pleased that many of our previous Co-operative Trust partners agreed to transfer across to support this new venture and are continuing to work with us to develop our children into well-rounded and socially responsible young adults.

Ofsted report

“The systems to check the performance of teachers are thorough and clearly identify the skills that teachers need to strengthen. The school’s substantial programme for teachers’ professional development has assisted well in ensuring teaching is good. Support and training for subject leaders have helped them to contribute strongly to improving teaching and pupils’ outcomes.”
