Job overview

Derwent Lodge is seeking to appoint a dedicated and forward-thinking Curriculum Co-ordinator to lead on the development of our curriculum from September 2018.  Derwent Lodge is an IAPS girls’ prep school of 140 pupils, which is part of The Schools at Somerhill, including Yardley Court boys’ school, and the Somerhill Pre-Prep. We have over 600 pupils on our beautiful site in Kent.

The successful candidate will already be an excellent classroom practitioner, who will work directly alongside the Head of Derwent Lodge and the Curriculum Co-ordinators across the three schools. Ours is a collegiate approach, in which we are seeking to embed more fully the values of Growth Mindset, under the leadership of the Vice Principal (Academic Director), across the schools.

This role is one where you will be directly involved in assessing, modifying and improving Schemes of Work in liaison with Heads of Department and Subject Co-ordinators. Data management and tracking is an essential element of the role, and the successful candidate will be confident in the use of Excel and management information software. Training in the school’s own MiS will be given.

Reviewing our school’s departmental and academic policies on an annual basis is essential, as well as ensuring the smooth-running of the school’s reporting schedule. Creativity and innovation within the classroom are welcomed, whilst a thorough understanding is required of assessment frameworks and how to continue to maintain academic rigour. Derwent Lodge is a non-selective girls’ prep, yet consistently high results are achieved.

The successful candidate will be someone who may already have management experience, or is keen to take on their first middle leadership role. The teaching commitment with this role will allow time for development and Derwent Lodge is committed to continuing CPD. We expect the successful candidate to teach across a range of subjects at KS2 and to be flexible and willing to contribute to our extra-curricular programme. There may be opportunities for the successful candidate to be a part of our PE/Games department.

Derwent Lodge is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.  We will ensure that all our recruitment and selection practices reflect this commitment. References will be taken up for those candidates short-listed for interview. The successful candidate will be subject to Disclosure and Barring Service checks along with other relevant employment checks.

The job description and person specification can be seen in our application pack. Applications can be sent to recruitment@somerhill.org

Competitive salary for the right candidate, dependent on skills and experience.

About Derwent Lodge School

Derwent Lodge is a family school with a happy and friendly atmosphere. The school is noted for its high standards of work, manners and courtesy. All pupils are encouraged to develop poise and confidence, enabling them to relate to their peers and adults in a natural and unassuming way. An emphasis is placed on caring for others. Each child is encouraged to do their best, to work with determination and to be proud of their achievements.

The curriculum places a strong emphasis on Literacy and Numeracy and is designed to challenge each individual. A well established programme of clubs and activities  takes place during lunch breaks and after school, playing an important part in widening their experiences and developing new interests. We have a highly rated sports department and we believe that every child should be given the opportunity to participate in sport. Music and Drama are also strong and the girls enjoy their involvement in many concerts, soirees and productions. Art is an area of excellence and much of the children's work is displayed around the school.

Girls can take the 11+ examinations for entry to Kent Grammar Schools or the entrance and scholarship examination set by various Independent Schools in the area. The Headteacher takes a close interest in the progress and wellbeing of all children and is readily available to meet with parents to discuss any aspect of their daughter's education.
