Al Basma is a popular, high performing ENC School in Al Bahia, Abu Dhabi. We are seeking a Curriculum Leader to lead the secondary English Department in our BSO accredited school (EduBase No.143834) commencing August 2022.

Our seven form entry school currently caters for 1800 children from FS1 to Y13. We opened a state of the art Primary block for Y3 to Y6 in September 2020. We continue to grow at a rate of around 200 students per year and expect to reach capacity of 2400 in 3 years time.

The successful candidate will have overall responsibility for the day to day running of the English Department including student attitudes to learning and engagement, raising the profile of the department with all stakeholders through different mediums including the use of digital media and the effective engagement of parents in their children's learning in English.

As a BSO school (EduBase No.143834), we are able to offer a UK recognised induction to candidates with QTS using the Early Career Framework, in association with ESP Education.

The successful candidate will be expected to play a central role in leading the quality assurance processes, performance management and ongoing professional development for their team including overseeing the progress of NQTs, ECTs and AO candidates in their team through UK accredited induction programmes.

We follow the 2014 National Curriculum of England and in EYFS the updated 2020 Development Matters Framework. We use both GL CAT4 and GL Progress tests for Year 4 to 10. In addition we offer a range of GCSE, iGCSE, iAS and iA Levels from Cambridge, Edexcel and Pearson exam boards to our older students. We have begun to introduce a range of BTEC qualifications to better personalise pathways.

We currently offer English Literature and English Language up to A Level.

The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that planning, intervention, exam entries, personalised pathways and the curriculum implemented in the English Department is data driven and appropriate; maximising outcomes in GL Progress Tests, International Benchmarking Assessments, GCSE, AS and A Level examinations. They will also be responsible for assessment, recording and reporting in the department.

The English Curriculum Leader will be required to work closely with the Secondary Senior Teachers and Secondary VP as well as the Year 6 Leader and Primary English Leader.

The school initially gained BSO (British Schools Overseas) accreditation in May 2016 in its second year of operation and continues to improve, achieving good with an increased number of outstanding features in May 2022. Since January 2017 the school has consistently achieved Band A gradings in the ADEK Irtiq'aa inspections. Most recently, in February 2022, the school consolidated its Very Good ADEK grading with a significant number of features graded outstanding.

• An internationally recognised Bachelor’s Degree in Y7 to 13 English and QTS or equivalent.

or

• An Internationally recognised Bachelor’s Degree in English or a closely related subject and an internationally recognised teaching qualification such as PGCE or PGDE in Secondary English and QTS or equivalent.

or

• An internationally recognised Bachelor’s Degree in any subject with an internationally recognised teaching qualification such as PGCE or PGDE in Secondary English with QTS or equivalent and one year of experience teaching Secondary English.

There is no longer a need for teachers to have post-graduation teaching experience (in accordance with ADEK regulations which apply to all private schools in Abu Dhabi)

 Please note two supporting references and a police clearance certificate or DBS no more than 3 months old must be provided by successful applicants.

Al Basma British School is a co-educational independent all-through school. It is based in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

The school opened its doors in 2014. Students follow the National Curriculum of England, with additional lessons in Arabic language, UAE Social Studies and Islamic Studies (for Muslim students) to meet the requirements of the UAE Ministry of Education.
