Job overview

The University of Huddersfield is one of the UK’s most successful, innovative and modern institutions. Recognised as a gold-rated university by the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), it has progressed positively in major league tables and won the first Global Teaching Excellence Award in 2017; ranking 1st again in England this year for professionally qualified teaching staff. A major agent of social mobility it has continued to transform over the last ten years - going from strength to strength in pursuit of its mission to be an inspiring and innovative University of international renown.

Housed within this dynamic institution, the School of Applied Sciences provides a vibrant teaching, learning and research environment for over 1500 students and 100 staff. It delivers an inspirational learning experience and undertakes pioneering research with a practical applied emphasis. The School is currently in the process of a £30million expansion of its facilities, adding a suite of research laboratories, general teaching space, a student hub and a four storey teaching laboratory block to enable it to enhance the delivery of scientific knowledge through modern practical technologies. This links with its emphasis on work placements and developing graduate skills, leading to excellent employment prospects. Its expanding links with industry also allow it to maintain the quality and contemporary nature of its courses, whilst its staff are internationally recognised for their research and consultancy work.

Following the promotion of Professor Jane Owen-Lynch, to the position of Pro Vice-Chancellor (Teaching & Learning), the School is now seeking to appoint a new Dean to build on its existing strengths. Commercially astute with first rate academic credentials and a proven track record of effective management within a university setting, the successful candidate will provide the requisite strategic leadership to ensure the School continues to thrive in an ever changing and increasingly technological world. A superb communicator they will represent the School both internally and externally across a range of key stakeholders, ensuring it continues to develop its growing reputation regionally, nationally and internationally. A key member of the University’s Senior Management Team, with a direct reporting line to the Vice-Chancellor, the new Dean will also make a pivotal contribution to the strategic progression and academic innovation of the wider University.
