Job overview

Deputy Head

Required from September 2021

This is a very exciting opportunity for an experienced school manager / leader to play an important role in an outstanding girls' school and become part of a high-performing team. The current post-holder is retiring after 16 years in post and academic processes are well-established and the academic / curriculum life of the School is in very good health, but the School never wishes to be complacent, and innovative ideas are explored and tested with enthusiasm.

The Deputy Head is a vital member of the Leadership Team and the Senior Management Team. The post-holder will work closely with the Headmistress and her office, forming an important and dynamic, strategic partnership, as St Helen’s sustains and develops its position as one of the leading girls’ schools in the country. The hallmark of this working relationship will be trust and loyalty. The Deputy Head will deputise for the Headmistress in her absence and will, on occasion, lead parallel teams in areas of operational activity.

All staff share the responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of the students, in accordance with the School’s safeguarding policies.

Founded on Christian values, we enable every girl to discover and develop her own strengths. St Helen & St Katharine is a school where success is celebrated but not revered and our goal is to ensure that every girl achieves success as she defines it, so that she can believe in herself, her talents and her abilities.

We are one of the leading girls’ schools in the country and are justifiably proud of a tradition of high aspiration and academic achievement (our students achieved record breaking GCSE results with 77% A* this year). But we take just as much pleasure in the warmth of the atmosphere here and in our dynamic range of extra-curricular activities. From Minecraft to Mandarin, Silversmithing to Sailing, Board Games to Big Band and much more besides, our girls are given the space and opportunity to make their own choices and find their niche.

A welcoming 22 acre campus in Abingdon provides exceptional facilities that include a brand new state-of-the-art Sports Centre; Performing Arts Centre; extended Sixth Form Centre; Science Centre with 12 new laboratories, break out spaces and a 200sqm science themed glass atrium and a 3D Design Centre.

This is a friendly and happy place in which lasting relationships are built on kindness and respect. Our ambitions for our students are based upon them developing confidence and resilience and an open-minded and creative approach to learning and to life.
