Haileybury Almaty

Haileybury Almaty is so much more than the leading academic school in Almaty; it is a community that focuses on high-performance learning. Founded in 2008, Haileybury Almaty provides outstanding holistic education and is a fully accredited member of COBIS and FOBISIA.

Almaty is a beautiful, lively, modern, family-friendly city with a rich cultural life, situated in the foothills of the stunning Tien Shan Mountains. Kazakhstan is a safe, diverse and fascinating country, relatively unknown but loved by so many who visit.

As a school, we have a strong focus on academic progress and achievement, and pupil leadership is at the very heart of our ethos. When families join Haileybury, they become lifelong members of a school which puts the learner at the centre of everything.

Our not-for-profit status means we continually reinvest for the future development of the school; demonstrated through the opening of a cutting-edge Robotics Lab and Maker Space, FIFA standard 5G football pitch, and many other initiatives during the pandemic last summer. Most importantly, however, the high-quality teaching and excellent extra-curricular provision make Haileybury Almaty a very special place to work.

We offer a curriculum that is based on the British curriculum, and the best of international and Kazakh curricula, that caters for 750 children aged between four to eighteen.  Pupils work in an environment where they are stretched and challenged and have their expectations raised to achieve demanding targets. Our pupils prepare for the IGCSE and the A Level programmes, and our Sixth Form leavers go on to achieve places in world-class elite universities, with a particular focus on the US Ivy League and UK Russell Group. In 2020 our pupils achieved 71% A*/A grades at A-Level. Such success is a result of the partnership between the school, our pupils, and their parents through our commitment to parental engagement.

We seek inspirational teachers with a passion for learning and their subject areas as part of our belief that great education occurs both inside and outside of the classroom and seek colleagues who can make a strong contribution to the extensive co-curricular programme we offer. Above all, we want committed, passionate teachers who are aligned with our vision, and who wish to make a significant difference to our pupils’ lives.

The school offers a competitive tax-paid salary, high-quality accommodation, baggage allowance, medical insurance, end of contract gratuity, pension contributions, and annual flights.

Haileybury Almaty is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, is a member of SACPA, and expects all staff and those connected to the school to share this commitment. Applicants for this post must be willing to undergo child protection screening including reference checks with previous employers and a DBS check or equivalent.

Interviews will be held online.

Haileybury Almaty (HAL) is situated in the vibrant city of Almaty, Kazakhstan, and was the first Haileybury school to be established in the country. With an ever-expanding student body that currently sits at close to 800 pupils ranging from Reception to Year 13 (ages 4-18), HAL offers a unique educational experience. Our primary medium of instruction is English, complemented by dedicated teaching of the Kazakh language and history.

Nestled at the base of the Zailiysky Alatau mountain range, Almaty is a true hidden gem. These mountains are part of the majestic Tien Shan range, extending all the way to the Himalayas in the South and the Altai range in the North.

Kazakhstan has celebrated three decades of independence, with its remarkable progress attributed to policies of neutrality, ethnic tolerance, and balanced international relations. This has attracted substantial foreign investment across all sectors, leading to impressive and resilient economic growth.

Formerly the capital until 1997, Almaty remains the heart of commerce, culture, and entertainment. The city boasts a diverse array of restaurants, clubs, and bars, all set in a relaxed cafe atmosphere. Warm summers and the surrounding countryside offer boundless opportunities for trekking and mountain exploration. Just a short drive from the city, you will encounter breathtaking vistas in the Zhailau mountains.

A 15-minute journey takes you to Medeo, home to an expansive open-air ice rink. Nighttime skating amid falling snowflakes is enchanting and breathtaking. For adventure seekers, the world's second-longest gondola ride from Medeo to the Shymbulak ski resort awaits. Shymbulak offers year-round attractions, from beautiful alpine meadows in the summer to a European standard ski and snowboarding resort in winter, including mesmerising floodlit night skiing.

At HAL, we understand the value of providing a comprehensive educational experience. In addition to our IGCSE and A-Level programmes, parents appreciate our diverse extracurricular activities such as sports, drama, music, community service, debating, Model United Nations, and the International Award (Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme). These offerings complement our rigorous academic curriculum.

Continuing Professional Development is a key focus for all of our staff at HAL. We offer in-house NPQML and NPQSL programmes as professional qualifications, along with a dynamic in-house and external CPD programme.

Our vibrant House system underscores our commitment to outstanding pastoral care and fostering a positive ethos among our students. House competitions occur year-round, and we reward academic progress, participation in school life, musical performances, sports achievements, and contributions to the community through this system.

Our Governing Body comprises five members nominated by the Founder Investors and five nominated by Haileybury UK, including the Master of Haileybury UK.
