With a rich heritage dating back to 1732, The Portsmouth Grammar School (PGS) remains true to the aims of its founder, Dr William Smith, in providing an excellent education that develops in pupils a hunger for broader horizons. Located on a well-resourced campus in the heart of historic Portsmouth, PGS today inspires and nurtures over 1,300 boys and girls aged 2½-18. Through its focus on equipping pupils for life beyond PGS and encouraging pupils to think not only about where they will be at 18 but where they aspire to be at 25, the School continues to honour the legacy of its founder whilst adapting its mission for the challenges of 21st century life.
PGS enjoys superb facilities in a unique historic location, including a state-of-the-art Science Centre, a Sixth Form Centre, the Health and Wellbeing Centre, a theatre and dining hall complex, a beautifully refurbished library, and its own excellent sports ground at Hilsea.
PGS is often described by visitors as having a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere, a view reinforced by our parents, pupils, and staff. It is an exceptional place to work, and this is a particularly exciting time for the School as a whole.
An outstanding individual is sought to be Deputy Head (Academic) at this leading co-educational school. With a strong track record in leadership and management, the successful candidate will have significant input into the strategic development of the academic life of the school. Working closely with the Head, he/she will nurture a joy of learning and scholarship beyond the bounds of the curriculum, as well as fostering the highest academic standards.
The person appointed will be a good honours graduate, an outstanding classroom practitioner with high levels of administrative efficiency, considerable personal stamina and resilience, knowledge of current educational trends, and a clear commitment to the safeguarding and well-being of pupils.
He/she will enjoy taking initiative as well as being part of a team and be able to draw on the bigger picture in addition to focusing on the detail. A visible and dynamic leader, he/she will be instinctively collaborative and able to inspire confidence across the school community and drive continuous improvements in pupil outcomes. With an ability to interpret and present data clearly and possessing good communication and inter-personal skills, the Deputy Head (Academic) will provide support and challenge to colleagues in the Senior School and maintain effective liaison with the Junior School.
