The Deputy Head (Academic) will be a creative, forward-thinking and inspirational individual, who will lead and develop the talents of all those within the School’s academic community. They will be responsible for the quality of learning and teaching throughout the School, and be a key member of both the School’s Executive and Senior Management Teams, working closely with the Head, the Deputies, the Chief Operating Officer and the Head of External Relations. In the fullness of time, the successful applicant is likely to aspire to Headship. The Deputy Head (Academic) is responsible to the Head and provides leadership in all aspects of learning and teaching at St Leonards.
The Deputy Head (Academic) will assist the Head in guiding the vision for all academic and curriculum matters in the School, and will set the highest of expectations for pupils’ academic progress.
The post-holder will align the different sections of the School, applying academically ambitious approaches to learning and teaching within the context of the IB, whilst demonstrating the values of the IB Learner Profile.
The Deputy Head (Academic) will directly manage the majority of the Heads of Department as well as the School’s academic curriculum leaders and coordinators.

It is one of just two schools in the UK to actively offer all four IB programmes, ensuring a seamless learner journey. The youngest pupils follow the Primary Years Programme, which goes hand-in-hand with the vibrant Outdoor Learning programme at St Leonards. This is followed by the Middle Years Programme and (I)GCSEs. In the Sixth Form, pupils choose between the Career-related Programme and the Diploma Programme.
Timetables are designed to establish a healthy balance of outstanding sporting and cocurricular activities alongside academic studies, with over 50 activities offered. St Leonards enjoys a rich sporting heritage, and continues to boast a strong record of achievement with pupils representing the school nationally in golf, rugby, lacrosse, hockey, horse riding, and small-bore rifle shooting. The leading five-tier Golf Programme continues to go from strength to strength, the Duke of Edinburgh Award is the fastest growing of all Scottish independent schools, and an exciting calendar of trips and activities ensures pupils leave St Leonards equipped with the skills required to succeed in today’s ever-changing world.
